Blacked out my chrome yesterday. With the rails, it took about 1.75 cans of plasti-dip. Really easy stuff.

Before anyone takes this route, I would highly recommend trying out the plasti-dipping. Excluding the time between coats, I think it took me about 2 hours for the emblems, 2 hours for the rack. I am so far being artistically inclined or 'handy' that it's not even funny.

My total costs for Plastidipping my emblems and roof rack were about $24:

2 cans @ $6 = $12.00
1 roll painters tape = $7.00
2 newspapers = $3.00
Tax @ 7% = $1.54
Total = $23.54

If you already have painters tape or newspaper or you only want to do your emblems (only 1 can needed), you could do it for much less.

What did you do to the front/rear lower pieces? Did you match the Attitude Black? If so, where did you get the paint? Or...is that gloss Plasti Dip?

I blacked out my front and rear emblems using Plastidip a couple weekends ago. The front was a breeze, but the rear was a pita. We removed the rear emblem and letters, which slightly scratched the black surface they were adhered to. Due to my OCD and it being scratched, we had to essentially dip the entire black plastic area surrounding the rear emblem and letters and then put the blackened emblem/letters back on with new 3M tape. If we had to do it over, I'd just tape off the entire back area and spray it all without removing the emblem and letters. There's no way I'd pay that much for the already blackened emblems though! That's ridiculous!
But it does look sharp and I'm glad to have the chrome off my TE finally.

I've got a 2016 trd pro. I powdercoated the rails and the exhaust tip and ordered the kit to do the back emblems. My question and maybe it's my ocd but has anyone tried to take the lights apart and blackout the silver plastic inside all the lights that run around the edge?

I figured I would share a few pics & my attempt to chrome delete. My original plan was to vinyl wrap (purchased black brushed AL) but that didn’t work out the greatest. Maybe another time. Sorry for the crappy shots, when the weather is nicer, I’ll take some better pics. Plasti dip & the lower trim is wrapped for now...

I have the SR5 ones around here somewhere. Ran around the house for 10mins but couldn't find them. Gimme a few days.

$99 vs. an $8 rattle can is a big difference, yet I've been very impressed with how mine have held up - weekly trips through the wash along with temps from 100 down to 5 (so far).

I will add that I am impressed as well with the stick-on kit and it gets my vote.

I have had mine on through the tail end of cold days of early Spring, all through this past Summer. Automated car-washed at least 2x a month. I have used the power-wash wand on it from the coin-wash places after getting into mud. The black emblems have held on perfectly and no sign of the black fading from the heat or sun. But the 4Runner is garage kept too when not out-and-about.

Gave my friend with the SR5 the SR5 side covers as well as the front emblem for the same duration and they are holding up just as well and he keeps his outside.

I tried plastidip on my badges this weekend and wasn't super satisfied with the results. It has the far away look but up close some edges are rough.

I'm considering the blackout kits with the adhesive letter shells but was wondering how you would take them off if you ever decided you wanted to go chrome again?

I'm sure they would come off pretty easy, yet you'll be left cleaning up the 3M VHB tape adhesive. Not too difficult to take off with isopropyl alcohol.

However, I'd doubt you could get the shells off without cracking. Fairly flimsy plastic...my guess is they were 3D printed rather than molded. Perhaps a heat gun would help but you'll end up bending them instead.

IMO, a one application product....yet definitely worth the price over plasti-dipping.
