Blcktpgsr's '97 transformation

Yes I just referenced Jersey Shore. Nonetheless one of the sweetest builds on the forum.

I heard, he also posted up some pics in his Photobucket account. Man he's got a real real capable machine, he just has to learn the tricks to unleash it.

I'm glad you're assisting him also and I can just tell how appreciative he is of you. I'm jealous of that SVRA you guys have over there but....someday son!

OOOOOOOOooooooohhh I see know I know who your brother is! haha I see the resemblance! In vehicles of course and by Erics hollister pictures lol... both of you have very well built rigs... he speaks very highly of you im sure you already know, We met at the last meet at bikerjosh house...

and you 4runner makes 90% of us on this forum look like sissies

Lookin good as always man! I saw you kinda hint a few times that you would like a armor bumper....didn't think you'd do it though.....since you kinda had the same idea as I did...(stock...but better).

Looks great man! If I had a black rig, I'd do every mod you did to it!

Just a little perspective for you guys:

Huge Transformation man! :artist2:

That must've been my thoughts as of recent. IIRC I sent you a PM on my preference between rear or front aftermarket bumper a while back, and I preferred changing the rear.

I guess that's the way things sometimes go, not as planned.

That older picture was taken on August 22, 2009, first few days when I bought it, the recent one was just this last Sunday, Sept 4, 2011.

2 years in the making.

lol, I guess that's sort of a good representation describing the development of the truck through the years. And thank you!

I'm glad my brother has found a good company of guys to hang around with, he was happy to have met you all.

While in the process of welding, I also re-configured the tire carrier and move the spare tire 4" up and 1" to the left. The effect is a much more updated and lifted back end.

Don't know but I can only imagine the departure angle gained by raising the tire to be significant, with the trailer hitch being one limiting factor. Admittedly, the obstruction of the rear view from the drivers seat is more this time, but only to a certain degree..after all it's only 4".

Here's the original tire carrier config

The comparison shot, before pic ( May 28, '11)to the left still showing the un-modified hitch and one BFG tire still mounted. After pic (Sept. 6, '11)is the most recent pic to date, with all the additional gizmos to it........Just sharing!

Wow, that was unexpected, and yet so very awesome. I love it.

Haha, surprised about the ARB bumper? The idea slowly grew in me, so that's where things ended up. Down the line, I would've gone for a plated bumper anyways.....time dictating. Thanks alot bro!

Yeah, surprised seeing the ARB up front.

I bet my brother would LOVE to have your old front bumper with the sweet micro DE's for his black '96.

Bet he would...but I re-used the Hella micro DE's if you haven't noticed. There's a bunch of pics in Photobucket taken just to house them on the ARB.

All I can say about this 4Runner and this build thread, at this point, is that so many of these ideas have floated around in my imagination, and watching them unfold in this build thread is like watching a great movie... it leaves you at the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next... and suddenly, there's a "to be continued....."

Leaving you waiting for months.

But it's always worth it. You're the man dude. Keep on keepin' on. The forum's lucky to have you.

ur rig made my top 5 list after the recent mods...but man..I am safe to say that this is now officially my favorite rig of all 4runners. that thing is cleannn

Half of the ideas that went into building the 4runner came from this great site. Seeing all your great rigs formed this rig to where it is. Really my truck is combination of bits and pieces of everyone's creations, with a twist of my own.:hatsoff:

Thanks buddy, I will keep on keepin' on...........to the next chapter!

I like the new location for the spare! Nice work man!

I love the revised spare tire carrier..form and function well, works for me!

Thanks again my friend.

OMG!!! Looks ridiculously good!!! can you say "wallpaper"?

It it ever finds it's way on anyone's computer screen....much thanks.

Wow, I will never ever consider my truck to be above or beyond everyone else', but I am truly honored by your remark, and to be highly regarded among the very best, and there are numbers of them....my :hatsoff:

Well I've really been hampered from doing any kind of wheeling activity due to the Inner tie rods that I found needed replacing. I was afraid to add any additional damage wheeling might cause, if I did.

I ended up having to also replace the Rack Guide, guide cap, spring and the nut, which I ordered from Toyota Parts Cheap. I ordered the parts off of a 2001 4Runner. 01-02 models came with the newer style Rack Guide. And while in the process of tryin' to fix the rack, I also ordered some Polyurethane Steering Rack Bushing Kit from Wheeler's Off-Road, Inc.

The tie rods by the way were ordered from Napa boasting a Ltd. Lifetime warranty.;):

The steering rack has no leaks whatsoever so replacing it would've been out of the question.
With the guiding instructions of my mechanic friend and following some of the How-to's and write up's others have already laid for us, tackling the job can actually be straight forward. Sorry no repeat write ups here.

Only pic....Right side Inner tie rod.

Yummy rack...Ever notice the TOYODA stamp on the rack housing?

New style guide cap w/ locktite'd cap nut. Also seen is a new replacement ITRE boot clamp from Toyota.

I took no pictures of the new steering rack bushings but here's what I replaced, along with the old miscellaneous rack guide bits and old ITRE's.
5-16.jpg~original

Minor snags I ran across..
The 19mm bolt in the middle atop the rack housing was a pain to remove at first but it gave eventually. And ofcourse removing the Diff drop was an extra step as well.
Doing the rack guide adjustment can be abit frustrating..atleast for me. I just went by feel according to the steering wheels stiffness and adjust accordingly, while also avoiding slop on the steering rack, seen inside the Inner TRE boot/bellow..That meant adjusting the guide cap, driving, adjust more till i get the right feel on the steering wheel.

ALL fixed!! Now the steering definitely feels more responsive and everything was history..Thanks for all the wonderful write ups and tips that saved me from spending big on a new steering rack.:guitar2:

While awaiting for the parts, i snagged a set of 97 LC 8wrap coils and shocks for $50 Cad...now that's not a bad price at all for the set. The LC owner ordered a set of OME kit including 861's for the front. He owns a dual locked, solid front axle monster. I'm hoping to be wheeling with him come next year.

Here's when I got 'em..Double purple-light blue-white(passenger) & purple-green-white(driver).
7-11.jpg~original

I painted them red and since I still have the front OME struts in yellow, I closely matched the shocks the same color.

Height comparison shot with the 890's
8-8.jpg~original

890's with one on top of a 1.5" Cornfed spacer....MY old set up.
9-8.jpg~original

And during the LC set install..boy, do those 6Ton stands help aton? he he!
10-7.jpg~original

After all was said and done, the LC coils netted 1" taller than my previous set up..Holy! it was too tall, so for the next two days I loaded the rear cargo with 4 stock tires on wheels, 2- 90lb power blocks I use for working out...oh yeah the 2 jack stands too! Gotta settle those springs down from being unloaded.

So, my usual wheeling buddy and I went farther east to Chiliwack and found us some nastier than usual logging roads and I tell ya, those coils and shocks didn't disappoint. I felt alot cushioned on long rocky-trail runs....flexes too!

11-9.jpg~original

9-9.jpg~original

Flexing it...Sure I can do better!
4-19.jpg~original

5-17.jpg~original

Also painted the trac bar red..
2-21.jpg~original

.......and replaced the ARB's amber signal light cover to clears.

Glad to be back out there!

awesome progress man! any plans for 99+ headlights or a projector retrofit? it would look much cleaner and updated in my opinion.

Looks great man! How is the ride compared to the 890's? I bet it's way more plush. Have the LC springs settled any with your added weight in the back?? I have the same springs going in soon.....

That's one of the easy updates I keep on putting off myself, 99 headlights that is. With projectors I agree it'll be so much better.

Without a doubt more plush and cushioned as I mentioned. The softer LC coils absorbs the jarring feel on rough grounds alot better.

Yes the LC coils have settled 1" since putting those heavy loads in the back. Now without any load minus maybe 40lbs of tools and accessories left from wheeling, it's about the same height as my previous height with the OME+spacer..and that measures to 25 3/4" center of hub - fender.

I just need to replace the front's with a more heavy rated coils to raise it up abit.

Well, that's one way to beef it up. Killer. You ever make your way to the Joe's Lake area?

Thanks...Wow Joe's lake is back east in the Ontario region I think, unfortunately where we went yesterday was only a few hours of diving eastward. I'd drive to Seattle first than that grueling days of driving.
