Blew up my motor

Sooooo
I was wondering if there is anyone on here that has replaced a motor, not had a shop do it, done it themselves.
I don't have the money to have a shop do it and I found a local recycler that I can get a take out motor for $600-700.
Just wondering if there's any helpful hints or things you learned along your process that would make this thing go a little easier.
I have a forklift and an assortment of tools and some knowledge mechanically.
Doesn't seem like a extremely "hard" job, looks like it's more a bunch of time and just making sure everything goes back the right way.
Also, the only specific question I have is "will any 3.4l work? Or is there any specific years that need to be matched to specific year trucks?"

Thank you in advance

Any update?

Just a note, I had to replace my 3.4 a few years ago. I bought a low mileage JDM motor. After installing it, we noticed that the pulley's on the new motor were a different size. Had to buy a new harmonic balancer and swap some other parts to make everything work together correctly. Just another thing to keep an eye out for.

Any update?

Sorry for not posting any updates till now, been a crazy couple months.
SO...
Got the new motor from Auto Gator locally, $854 which included the motor (less pulleys, starter), $100 core charge, one day shipping to my buddy's shop and tax...which I thought was pretty decent. The motor had around the same amount of miles on it as the original but the timing chain had just been done before it was wrecked.
Had a buddy install it, unfortunately it was from a tacoma and the wiring didnt match up (which I was unaware of) so some wiring had to be done.
Just got it back today actually and it runs great, better than before.

Only two issues I have come across so far are the AC isn't cold anymore, but I was just told that the condensor had to be removed so I just need to charge it again. Other issue is, it idles low, at start up its between 475-500 RPM, which I read it should be higher than that, especially at start up.

Any ideas on how to fix or adjust the idle?

Have you cleaned your MAF sensor lately? That's a simple thing to do. Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks as well. Cracked/dry rotted hoses etc.

I tried this on the original motor with no change, haven't tried to clean it on the new motor yet since I just got it back a few hours ago haha but I will give it another try this weekend

Since you condenser was removed and your system was exposed to the atmosphere, you should also replace your receiver/dryer because the desiccants are saturated now unless your buddy quickly capped off the connections to keep moisture from the air entering your AC piping. When you replace the receiver/dryer you need to add 20cc of compressor oil: ND-OIL 8 or equivalent.

I'm guessing your buddy who installed the engine for you has the ability to vacuum down the system and charge it for you. The capacity of the AC system on our rigs is 1.54 lbs or 698 grams.
infamousRNR and I just made a video of how to recharge a partially filled AC system but it also discusses recharging a fully evacuated system as well.

Here's the video:

Just went through this myself! You can get an OE Denso dryer for $13.76 shipped off of Amazon Prime. Refilling yourself is possible if you have the mechanical know-how. You can rent the vacuum pump and a set of A/C manifold gauges from Autozone for free. Just make sure to let that vacuum pump work for awhile and let it get all of the moisture out of the system. If your system wasn't capped off as mtbtim said, a few hours...even overnight wouldn't hurt. There are plenty of videos available on how to refill. All you will need is 2 cans of R134a. You will have a little leftover.

No it won't turn over now, just sounds like the starter is trying to spin but won't. I think it's hydrolocked with all the coolant.

Remove all the plugs and then see if it will turn over. If it is hydro locked the rad fluid will come out of the spark plug holes when you turn it over. If it does, that get as much of the fluid out as you can and then do a compression or leak down test to see if you can narrow it down to a cylinder.

Like another poster has said, I would remove the suspect head and get it checked out.

He already changed the engine.

Yeah, I'm a little more worried about this low idle. So this morning was the first start after sitting over night in the cooler temps. It started then died, started then died, started again and gave it gas to keep it running, then sat at this idle till engine temp got up

Not sure why it's not idling at the 1400-1700 rpm like it used to right when you start it to help warm it up either.

Everything I've searched was for a high idle not a low idle so any suggestions other than the MAF?

Vacuum leaks. May try to do a smoke test on it.

Did you re-use the same throttle body? It could potentially have a clogged IAC, what you are describing are classic syptoms of one.

My offer of helping still stands btw!

I think it's a moot point now. He has a new engine in it. Good luck with the AC issues. I couldn't imagine not having AC in Ga in August.

I agree IAC. Mine did that after I took everything off the top to do the valve cover gaskets. I ended up cleaning mine out with MAF cleaner and it started working normal after a few starts. Even if you have to replace, its pretty cheap.

No the only things that were swapped over were the pulleys.
I'm gonna clean the MAF sensor when I get home today and see if that does anything cause this is a different one than the one I cleaned on the last motor to try to fix this issue

So check some things today with gamefreakgc...

checked all the grounds and cleaned some of them up
cleaned MAF sensor
checked for any major vacuum leaks
reset the ECU

idle is just a little better than before, still too low...

we came up with a thought, maybe the O2 sensors are covered with crap from all the coolant and rusty crap that ended up going into the exhaust and sitting in there for a few months while I waited for it to get fixed? So its going to get some seafoam and after that, new O2 sensors and see if that helps any...

IAC will get checked at some point when I have the time and patience LOL

So I have been driving the 4runner around to and from work, and today I start it up in the morning and decide I'm not going to give it any gas like I have had to before and see what happens...started up perfect, high idled and dropped down to normal idea speed...I am thinking that maybe the computer just had to reset and relearn everything again. Just wanted to give an update
