Problem:
Cars with block heaters usually have the plug hanging out the front flopping all around.
Justification:
Where I live, it is nice to be able to quickly & easily plug in your vehicle. The main purpose (in my mind) is so that your engine warms up quicker and therefore throws heat faster when you want to drive away. I'm not doing this for fear of not starting or engine damage (although it probably helps).
Options:
A) At one point the ford taurus used to have a nice plug but it was mounted low. I wanted a mount location that would not get iced-over and be hard to access.
B) Previously (Ford Ranger) I adapted a boat plug-in to do the job. The part is made by "Marinco". This worked well enough, but I didn't like the rubber front cover (it sometimes froze shut) and I didn't like the fact that it wasn't 100% sealed when closed. However, it was very fast and easy to install.
C) I noticed that semi-trucks had solid looking plug ins. Kmvreter ordered some semi-parts so I thought I would look into this as well. This is the option I eventually selected, but could not get the same plug he did.

5605149 water proof housing $30
A friend created an L-shaped bracket. After removing the front bumber cover drill and bolt the bracket to the front most cross member.
Wire your accessories (in this case the block heater and the battery blanket) to the plug and voila! all done.
Lessons Learned:
Mount the unit higher in the bracket so the boot has clearance and so that you can get a better grip on the cap when you have a big glove on.
