Blown engine situation, opinion wanted....

I'm in a situation with my t4r (2010 V6)..... It was towed to dealer 15 days ago because it wouldn't start... it would start, run for 1 sec and shut down. After being towed there they could NOT reproduce the issue and it ran fine. Skipping the boring parts, two days later they tell me the engine is expired (105,000), rod thru the block. I have an extended warranty with Zurich, Zurich is giving them a hassle about wanting to know why.... the dealer has already proven it's not sludge or water damage. Zurich wants the engine pulled / oil pan removed / rods looked over.....

My issue / concern is this...... the service adviser thinks they will void the warranty due to lift (bilstein shocks 2.5")...... I think NO matter what, since the engine "expired" while they were driving it, the engine should be replace at minimal cost to me!!

What do you all think please?

Zurich or the dealer wouldn't be able to outright void the warranty due to your lift. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act means they have to prove that the lift was the direct cause of the engine damage. This site has more info on the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (I'm not vouching for them, just the first result that came up for me), it should have resources to push back if the dealer or Zurich give you trouble.

I'm more surprised to hear one of these engines giving up in ~10 years and only 105000 miles. Has anyone else heard of or run into issues like this?
 
I agree and wonder if the mechanic was abusing it.... does the comp have a tattle tail for RPM? I assume if it does they wiped it!

Engines fail for various reasons and at various mileages/years of service depending on several factors including maintenance, or lack thereof, a mistake in changing oil, a hose rupturing, etc.
Does it happen very often to a 4.0 V6, no, but it can.
 
The 1GR-FE in the Tacoma is almost entirely different from the 1GR-FE in the 5th gen 4Runner.

Basically all they have in common is the name, and displacement.
 
I'd say the one in the 5th gen 4Runner. As it is the result of all the improvements Toyota made to the '1GR-FE'. The improved version in the 5th gen has been on the market for 11 years now.

I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune. That is the first 1GR-FE I've heard of in a 5th gen which is supposedly "Blown".

I'd be curious to know what exactly went wrong. And why.
 
Thank you, and me also..... I'm not a professional mechanic anymore, and I know shit happens.... I'm the second owner at 85,000 miles and I have NOT beat this 4runner at all! I have however beat the living shit out of my 4th gen and it's running like a timex at 260,000! I would really like to know if it was over RPM'ed by a young punk mechanic on the test drive!!

I must say though.... I bought this a little over a year ago and I always thought it had low-end noise! Everyone else was like.. na, thats fuel injectors..... I didn't buy that one bit, but not being familiar with the engine, I wasn't sure!

How would they even over rev an engine with a computer controlled automatic transmission? I'm pretty sure it won't let you downshift manually and overspeed it, and it's gonna upshift on it's own before redline.
 
Nope, never! Makes sense though for a comp controlled engine, so I guess I may have been correct about the low end noise... rod bearing noise!

I'm driving my sisters Mazda3 and it when in manual mode, it does NOT upshift, but the 4runner does!

When I was a kid working in a gas station, the owner used to buy cars with a rod knock like this and fill them up with 90 weight gear old. Made them nice and quiet. Then he resold them for a profit. Not saying that is what happened here, but at this point you would never know.

You got it used at 85K miles so it’s possible the previous owner dicked around inside the engine and put it back to “running” condition then sold it to you. Then you drove it 20K miles and then the engine finally went to shit.
