blown head gasket

i've got a 99 4runner 2.7l with 200k miles and a blown head gasket. i'm gonna tackle the head gasket replacement myself but i'm unsure as to where to get parts besides autozone or the dealer. also i need to get the head machined so i've got to pull the cams and all the valves. is that something the machine shop will do for me? should i get the head completely reworked? should i just get a new head? thanks for the input.

I have a 3.4 but took my heads in with all the valves still in. Not sure about the 2.7 but i had to pull the cams to get the heads off and that was the only reason i pulled them. They did everything else which included hot tanking the heads, grinding the valve seats, a valve job(~180-200 per head), decking the heads(60-80 bucks) and reassembling to check lash. I had work done on the block and crank as well so i can't definitively say the cost on everything but I think a new head would definitely cost a bit more.

Also, i thought my block would be fine as is but it needed decking as well so you might straight edge it and check for corrosion.

hope this helps

also, a lot of guys on here recommend

New heads are very expensive. Take the old head to a shop and have it tested for leaks or cracks.

The head gasket needs to be OEM. Other miscellaneous gaskets and things like valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gasket, etc are not as critical. I've yet to have an aftermarket gasket fail me.

Thanks for this just got my heads off of my 3.4 5vz-fe and was wondering the same thing. All OEM parts plus machining cost is gonna be pricey!! With just OEM head gaskets, head bolts , and maybe valve cover gaskets and valve stem seals. I can save some $$ using aftermarket gaskets elsewhere.
