blown head gaskets estimate

my mechanic has already upped the price but reduced his hourly rate cause he made a mistake.

I hope I'm wrong but I see this becoming a theme for your fix. Definitely not hoping anything goes wrong for you as I have a 4.0 too and don't want the karma but to underestimate a job like that wouldn't leave me with a feeling that this guy knows what he's doing.

i know its not thats why i put the quotes in...i just said simple cause thats what i was just thinking that it should be but its not lol. and the thread you posted was previously mentioned and i already looked through it.

also mentioned was that it was indeed at least a 16 hour job and my mechanic has already upped the price but reduced his hourly rate cause he made a mistake.

my bad on the repost. I did a head gasket once on the 99 subaru i had and it was the most difficult project I've ever taken on, for mechanics who do it often, kudos

ouch that hurts...would hate to have this "simple" task to cost so much since the parts literally only cost couple hundred lol.

so did you feel a difference in power after you got it done? huge difference in feel?

Yea its mostly labor charges and no difference in power. Yea a little difference in feel. But not huge difference

I know nothing about this repair, but why wouldn't you get a couple more bids? It wouldn't cost you a penny and you'll go into it with more knowledge.

true...but i got into a rush as i just got back from my out of the states and this was the guy recommended to me from the head shop. and already dropped the car off before you offered this idea lol.

thanks though anyway...we will see how it goes hopefully nothing goes wrong lol.

Curious on your mileage before your HG crapped out.

I was at 150k when it actually went out even then it wasnt really noticeable i still drovr it 4k miles like that. Just a rough idle at start up for about 30 seconds to a min then fine and sometimes a misfire code but no over heating and only minimal coolant loss. but I do believe It happened around 100k just such a small leak I never realized it. Sometimes I would let it idle in park for anything longer than 15-20 min and cut it off then come back after work and start it I would get a little smoke like it was burning off leftover coolant or oil.

$1200 sounds very cheap.

My head gasket replacement cost $3159.98. Went around 180k miles. Very complete job done by an engine shop that specializes in rebuilds, race car motors, etc. I've known the guy for 30 years. Went through the whole motor. Bottom end was all good, top end machined, valve job, etc.

well hopefully he doesnt realize that after he takes off the parts lol because i dont want to spend any more money on this car that this extra $1500-$2000 as its 10 years old and over 230k miles. just wouldnt make sure to be throwing almost the value of the truck worth of money into head gasket that could possibly go bad again soon.

anyone that has had it done have problems with it?

Gasket redesigned

The new gasket seemed much more substantial than the one that was removed. It is an issue with the original gasket as they all fail in the same spot.

I have 26000 miles since the rebuild, runs like a top. I plan on another 100k+. Buying a used motor wasn't really an option for me. I know my vehicle's maintenance history, an unknown with a used motor.

My friend that did the job said the inside of my motor was in like new condition. Had a couple burnt valves as a result of the coolant leak most likely, so he did a full valve job, but otherwise, motor was pristine. I put on a lot of miles and use Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil and change it every 13-15k miles. Love that stuff!

13k to 15 k between oil changes? Does it come out in clumps? I don't care what the manufacturer says, the oil is dirty and used up after 5 or 6k. It sure would be easier to see on the dipstick though.

You would be better off buying cheaper oil and a filter and changing it out when it gets dirty.

ur right i put in mobil one and just change it out every 7500 miles...you can get it cheap when its on sale at autozone or just go to walmart and buy the 5 gal jugs.

also i just talked to the mechanic and he said everything looks good as far as the engine goes...just need to get a new timing chain kit and water pump and im good to go.

so guys...just finished getting the car back and he replaced head gaskets, milled heads flat, timing chain and water pump for $2000 lol. he did accidentally break the thermostat housing but i dont think it was his fault as we both looked inside and seemed like the casting was actually bad.

either way he did a fantastic job and i would recommend him...he showed me all parts he took out and replaced and was texting me back and forth on what was going on.

he is based in va beach, va so if anyone would like his info pm me and ill give you his info. great guy to deal with....so guess an honest guy will not charge that much after all.
