Body work and paint job soon!

I was lucky enough to find a true artist with high credibility in my local area to perform my body work and new paint job!

I have my two new fenders and new driver's door, with my new passenger door arriving in three days. The 4Runner goes into his shop on that day.

But I'm having trouble deciding something...

Should I have the shell the same color as the 4Runner, or go with my only other desired choice, a gloss black shell?

Shell color:

#1. Dark Gray Metallic w/ gloss black shell.
#2. Dark Gray Metallic w/ Dark Gray Metallic shell.

(I'm leaning towards option #1)

I think I'd go with the black shell, #1. Personally, I like the flat-black look, but a gloss will look good too.

Is the shell matched now? Throw up a side pic. And are putting the stripes back on it?

No, the shell is currently cream color .. and the old, gross decals will be gone forever. I don't want any, I prefer a solid color look.

I need to make sure the anti-chip protectors get sprayed black too (trademark)

I'm 99% sure I'm going with a gloss black shell.

But do most people prefer flat black over gloss black for some reason?

Yeah, I think it will really compliment the dark gray metallic color.

So .. (this might seem silly)

Should I have the chip protectors painted gloss black too?

or have them the same color as the rest of the truck?

Bottom line, do what makes you happy.

I've never liked the tops in a gloss finish because they didn't come that way. You can see I am an all stock purist! HAHA!

To me, when they're gloss it looks odd. Although on yours it wouldn't look bad because the body and the top wouldn't be the same color. On mine, if I had done the top gloss it would have looked like a Maaco quickie paint job where nothing was taped off. You wouldn't have to worry about that.

Bottom line, do what makes you happy!!!

I agree with 93. I'd go flat black on the shell. I'd go further than that, if I ever put the shell back on mine I'm going to rhinoline it.

I guess I don't really know what the visual difference really is between gloss and flat .. I thought gloss meant shinier and sexier. . but yours is damn sexy!

Now I'm thinking maybe I should go flat black instead..

I need to know ahead of time which way will make me happier, that's what I'm unsure about right now .. whatever I choose will be pretty much permanent so I feel I must choose wisely. I only have three days to decide..

Yeah, I had mine redone flat when it was in for paint. Very similar to original. My painter mentioned doing mine gloss, but the first thing he would have had to do is sand all of the texture off the top. Gloss would have really made mine blend together like it was all one piece, I like the contrast though.

Now I'll mess you up again. Ditch the "chippie protectors" (aka- dirt holders, rust promoters) weld the mounting holes up and put some 3M clear bra there for protection!

I like your choice for top color. I think it's gonna look great!

I just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing here... the panels in front of each rear fender?

Haha! I'm just messing with you buddy. After how much thought you were putting into the top color, I thought I'd throw another decision out there. And yes, we're talking about the same thing. When does it go to the painter? I can't wait to see it done.

Yeah, I already knew there were those who removed the chippies, but I'm not ... for now. Who knows, perhaps someday.

I just dropped it off. My body man made me choose which dark gray metallic color I wanted from a whole line of colors from GM, Nissan, Toyota, etc. and when I finally made my choice between the different dark metallic colors, the label underneath the color I chose happened to say: "Toyota - Dark Gray Metallic" .. it's like it was meant to be.

He also brought up the idea of color matching the shell to the truck and I gave him a big grin as I explained to him that I've been talking about this decision online for the last three days now! he was leaning toward color matching but I explained that the flat black shell with the dark gray metallic would compliment each other.. he just smiled.
