Bolt at end of CV - is it required?

Hi everyone,

I am definitely in need of your assistance today! So I am swapping the CV shafts out of the front of my 4Runner. I have both shafts out however, when removing the drivers side I snapped the bolt that is screwed in to the very end of the CV shaft. It's a small golden bolt that had two washers on it. I successfully extracted it and had no problems removing the passenger side. From my research it seems this bolt is a backup to the c clip which retains the front CV laterally.

My questions is: what is the name of this bolt and where the heck can I find one?

I have called autozone and similar stores and none of them turned anything up. I've seen this bolt referred to as an axle bolt, however since none of those auto stores had it I suspect that's not the correct name. Any help y'all could offer would mean a lot, I'm pretty frustrated at myself for breaking it in the first place.

You can ask for then at the dealer. Picked one up but I don have the part #. Just ask for the bolt at the end of the cv with the fixed washer. It should only have one. I think it cost me a buck 50. I coned mine cause I forgot about it when I pulled my drive flange off. Honestly I do not think it is a necessary item. I believe it prevents the shaft from pulling to far from the hub.

I knew I should have called a service department I just assumed they wouldn't be able to find it without a name. I'll give them a call now. i really cannot figure out if it is necessary or not. The c clip should prevent any movement away or towards the hub of the cv shaft. What would the bolt and washer combo even be contacting that would prevent movement away? The FSM I have for an 88 doesn't even show the bolt on the CV diagram

**Update - I answered my own question***

From the FSM it looks like the only purpose of the bolt and washer is to prevent the manual (or auto) hub assembly from pulling away from the CV. This situation would only occur if the 6 cone washers, lock washers, and studs all let loose as well. Additionally, the c-clip should retain the position of the CV axle with respect to the hub so the bolt must be merely a secondary safety measure. I would still want one on my truck regardless.

I can verify that the bolt is not necessary, as I didn't have it installed on mine when I pulled it apart years ago, thought it was bad that the bolt was missing, but talked to some old school guys and they said it doesn't matter if its not there. I never replaced it and ran about 90 thousand miles on it like that before I went to a straight axle!

Well that was my impression and I just drove three hours with a bolt on one side and not the other so it must be okay! Thanks for the information.
