I've seen some people have the Borla XR-1 installed but haven't seen any ProXS's. Im really not looking for anything too loud (which the XR-1 is) and im mainly just replacing my exhaust because a pipe clamp broke right above the rear axle and the mufflers sounds like it has nuts and bolts in it lol.

Does anyone have a reservations against the ProXS series?

I have it and I love it. Very deep tone and no annoying drone when you're out cruisin around. Mine is a dual outlet one tho.


 
Cool I probably wont do the dual out but it does look really nice. I will probably just leave the stock dump location. I know your in a different state but how much did you pay for the installation of the dual out setup? Also what tips are you using?
 
Thanks. I got some friends at the exhaust shop that did all the pipe bending for me. I welded the muffler on myself. They charged me $150 to do the piping. He told me he's charging more for the next set of duals on a 4Runner. The longest piece of strait pipe after the muffler is maybe 12". Other than that, its one bend after another. As for the tips, they're 18" stainless, 2.5" outlet w/a straight cut rolled edge. I think I eventually ended up getting those off ebay because I was having a hard time finding those exact specs. I'm 20mins away from Summit Racing and they didnt even have the tips I wanted.

No idea, I went with the largest one they had that would fit which I think has more to do with the final sound than does the model.
But the Turbo XL is rather quiet at idle and only if you open the throttle and have an ISR mod and deckplate mod does it roar a bit.

Gotcha from what im reading and seeing the case length for the TurboXL is 19in and the ProXS is 14in. That tells me the ProXS will be much louder. Thanks for the heads up this changes things.

What diameter should I get? Ive read 2.25 is better because you dont lose torque. 2.5 you tend to lose a little bit this is from what I read.

Thats only if you replace the entire exhaust system, pipes and all.
If your doing that I would stick with 2.25

Just the muffler I don't think it makes any difference, the one I got was 2.5"
 
Maybe someone else will comment on either the Turbo XL vs the Pro XS im like right on the edge of going with the XL. I just dont want it to be crazy loud all the time. Mainly only if im in it hard.

I am pretty sure the 'ProXS and Turbo XL" are the exact same muffler, I think the Turbo XL is just the old name.

I would get the 40664 (2.25") or 40665 (2.5") which is the largest one and it fits perfect, still a bit smaller than the stock one.
That is the best & quietest one that Borla makes for the 4Runner.

Its not loud at all.

Thanks for the advice I went with the 40664 and it sounds great not to loud with minimal drone but sounds pretty good when you push it. Had it installed yesterday for 140 bucks. Some additional welding was required because of rust.

I thought it sounded pretty good and Borla is a good quality muffler so should be fine for many years.
 
For a super charged (or soon to be sc'd) 4runner would it be recommended to go with a 2.25 or 2.5??
I have read people recommending both, just looking for more input on the subject

I have heard both ways and each side saying it with absolute certainty, you would think this is one of those things where hard data would be easily obtained and debunk one side or the other.

I have heard keeping the 2.25" gives you better torque.
Heard that if you SC going to 2.5" even 3" gives you better high end or highway power and mpg.

If I am not mistaken I think the Borla Cat Back system uses BOTH sizes in specific areas so if you are talking replacing the whole exhaust and not just the muffler or small section then I would opt for the Borla Cat-Back.
Doubt you could go wrong with it.

I think also that the configuration, a straight flow through vs baffled muffler etc can probably make just as big a difference.

Hi there,

is that $140 total installed or $140 + $100 for the muffler. Trying to figure out is it worth it to get the whole Borla bolt on for $560 DIY that I can return the car to stock later or just get the muffler.

I can tell you that mine cost $93 for the muffler and $40 to have it welded on.

Sounds as though the OP had some problems of some sort though and a lot more welding done than just the muffler.
