Bought a Prius

Wow, a whole host of responses here. I guess I expected that! Pics coming, for those who want 'em.

First off, it's used, not new. It's a 2010, and it has 63K miles (yeah, lots O highway). After trade-in of the Passat, we got the car for $15,300. Not too shabby, considering this thing is pretty much top of the line. Replacement traction batteries are less than $2K, and only need to be replaced if they go bad, out of warranty. 100K is a myth. Many of these cars are going past 200K on the stock traction battery.

Anyway, I'm not here to evangelize about the Prius. It's just a car that gets great fuel economy. My parents have one, and they are getting 55mpg average...for the 7 months they've had it. My brother has the previous generation, and he's getting 49.5mpg average. I'll be able to drive this thing for 2 weeks on a single tank of regular gasoline (about 450 miles), and it will cost about $30 to fill it up (at today's prices).

The Passat was a great car. It needed a few repairs that I didn't want to do (all 8 control arms, etc.), and it was 10 years old. I got tired of replacing cracked plastic parts in the PCV and coolant systems. It was very comfortable, quiet, and had superior visibility. Just time for something new, I guess.

Cheers!

A few pics. The weather is awful today, so this is the best I could do in the garage.

If the decision to buy the Prius is to save money on fuel, then it would make more sense to buy a good used fuel efficient Toyota with low miles, than a new Prius. Did you forget to factor in the new set of USD $10,000 batteries you need to replace @100,000 miles...

The batteries last the life of the car.

Haha whats the life of the car ? Most frames are rated to a million miles .....and I don't care how good the tech has gotten , life of the car can't be right , sound like marketing to me, that has to be bs...lol ... I would definitely expect more then 100k though ...

The OP seems like an intelligent enough fellow. I'm sure he knows that it would have been cheaper to buy an old beater honda to put around in but I'm sure he wanted something NICE for his commute. When you spend a large part of your day in a vehicle you want it to be comfortable and quiet.

Maybe the pre 2010-2011 got better mileage or are driven under 70 mph. I bought my wife a new 2011 Prius III and it does not get over 47 mpg usually on the highway. Where the Prius shines is in stop and go city traffic, not highway. It still gets really good gas mileage for a car. Although I wouldnt buy another one. Heck, my 2000 Honda Civic with 146k gets 33-35 mpg all day long still.

Congrats though, its a fun, creepy quiet car.

Exactly, and some people do not understand that.

Um, 47 on the highway isn't "shining"? How many other cars can beat it? I can't think of any. I have first-hand experience with these cars getting well over 50 on the highway, and 55 or better overall.

I'm quite aware of the benefits of the HSD system in stop and go traffic, but this car also has the potential for the best highway mileage of any modern car on the road. AND, it's friggin' comfortable, quiet, roomy, and has a ton of creature comforts that an old Civic doesn't have. I'm not bashing Civics...I have owned several of them, and they have their place in my heart. But for $15-16K, there isn't a better/more reliable car with this list of specs that can come close to the fuel efficiency.

Just an update. We've had the car for 6 months now, and really like it a lot. We've averaged over 50mpg for most of that 6 months. Currently getting 51.1 (actual, measured) mpg. The digital FE gauge is optimistic - says we're getting about 57mpg - but does a reasonable job otherwise.

$30 to fill it up, drive it for a couple weeks (every day), repeat. Super easy oil changes, and that's all I expect to do to it for a while.

Got the windows tinted, which helped make it look a little less pedestrian. Will get a fresh pic up soon.

I dont mind priuses, but as stated before the crazies just ruin it. Id definatly get one to commute everyday. The new small one and wagon both look sweet! IMO

Agreed about the crazies. I'm not one of 'em. In fact, I usually keep it in "PWR" mode, and it's actually quite "zippy".

I don't mind them either, but couldn't see myslef driving one...plus it always reminds me of the "SMUG" episode of South Park.
Thaaaaaaanks!

Much better video than the woman yelling.

It reminded me of what frac locations look like.
