Brake Assist - Panic Stop (Tire Pressure)

Just resurrecting an old thread... I love my 2017 LTD, except for this brake assist feature. I consider it to be unsafe, so much so that I am thinking of trading my truck in for something else. It has happened to me too many times in the short time I've had the vehicle. It happened today. I was on a major highway, in the left lane, lots of traffic around. A car changed into my lane a little too closely, so I got off the gas and hit the brakes, and not hard, either. And the brakes locked up, the truck fishtailed a little, and it made a lot of noise. Scared the crap out of me, yet again.

This is not normal braking behavior. I've been driving for enough years, including as a professional, to know when my vehicle is or isn't behaving correctly. This one isn't. My '04 LTD, which I drove for 148K miles, did. But I sure as hell don't need to be surprised by the way my truck drives. And there is no way I'm going to try and adapt my driving style to what I consider to be a defect in the vehicle.

I also worry about the cars behind me misinterpreting my truck's behavior as me driving erratically, and causing the other driver to take some kind of inappropriate action as a result, including plowing into my back end, or swerving into another lane and / or car.

I know here isn't the right venue to get Toyota to change this. But I'm surprised they haven't by now. The least they could do is throttle it back some. I'd prefer that it be eliminated totally. It's software controlled, so issuing an update isn't that hard to do.

And if that's correct, I will get rid of this truck. I can't keep driving this thing with this feature. It is NOT safe.

I don't know what it is with auto designers, but this is a dumb design decision. So is start / stop. I will never buy a vehicle with that. Ever. Nor will I ever buy one with any variety of brake assist. I've been driving for a very long time, including as a pro, and I do NOT need this.

Right in the middle of that, I came up to a red light and hit the brakes, not hard. But they went into panic mode and locked up and the ABS came on and the ass end slid to the left and I slid right into the middle of the intersection where I had the red light. I've been driving for many decades, and this is not the right way for a truck to behave.

When I got to the dealer, I told them that either they fix this, or I'm getting rid of the truck because it just isn't safe. They came back and said there was no way to change it, it's working as designed, yadda yadda. I love the truck overall, but I can't tolerate this behavior, so I will get rid of it this fall. And I won't go back to Toyota, either.

I won't buy a vehicle with a start / stop engine, or one with automatic brakes or assisted brakes, or any of a number of other nanny features. What the heck is wrong with the car industry these days for them to think that these features are a good idea? They may work for some people, but I'd bet they're more of a distraction than anything else.

So... I got a random email the other day, ostensibly from Toyota, asking me about my 4Runner and how I liked it. I normally ignore these things because of the scam or phishing threats they have, but I decided to go ahead and fill this one out. Most of the questions were plain vanilla stuff, but there was a comment box at the end where I could say whatever I wanted. So, I unloaded on them about my brake assist feelings. And submitted it, thinking that was that.

Well, yesterday, I got a call from Toyota about my comment. I had a long discussion with the guy, and expanded on my feelings. He sounded very sympathetic and sincere, and said a lot of "Sorrys" about it. He also said he'd feed this back to the development team so that they'd be aware of it.

I have to admit, I never fill these things out, and when I did this one, I didn't expect to ever hear from them again. It was the only time I've ever gotten a response. I have no idea if my comments will ever have an effect, but at least Toyota cared enough to actually follow up with me.

I still have the issue, though.

I just found out that I had Nanny brake "take over". Just wanted to slow down for a changing light, to fast I guess from gas to brake. Front nose dived, fronts wanted to lock up, but abs kicked in. Book I had in the passenger seat went flying into the dash board and as I came off the brake peddle saying WTF! I was safely almost at a stop about 200 feet (2light polls... So 180') from the light. Usually hear that kind of racket followed by a bang and a " oh fu__ ". One more reason to ditch the TuRD. Will try to recalibrate the system this weekend, but not getting any codes saying it needs it. Guess it's a good thing I'm not aggressive anymore. Good chance I might die if I have to drive in NYC in the future.

So recently I upgraded my TRD Pro shocks to the new Bilsten 6112 with 1" additional lift and a 1/2 spacer in the rear with the Bilstens with remote Reservoir.

First off the ride is better and as Joe at Chi-Town 4x4 stated the dive and rear wheel shit your pants lock up is significantly reduced.

On a side note my wife has a new Audi A3 and the brakes on that car make or 4Runner seem like child's play. Talk about an ass puckering stop and I thought the 4Runner was bad.

first Assisted brake today

2018 SR5, had no idea this existed. Didn't slam them, but braked quickly to avoid an idiot driver (bountiful in Chicago) and Brake assist kicked in. I've enacted ABS on many vehicles, and I always knew it was coming, and was happy when it did. This scared the shit out of me, as I thought I was somehow running over my own front suspension before I even hit the idiot in front of me. I nearly let up!! but double pumped it instinctively, because of experience with cars without ABS and cars with single-stage Master cylinders (66 Plymouth). Definitely not a fan of this feature, and still shook :frisky::frisky::frisky::frisky::frisky::frisky::frisky:

LOL - I was taking my in-laws to Midway and I had to brake for a red light camera. I mother-n-law screamed and my Father-N-Law asked what that hell just happened. So I feel your pain.

Sorry, I can't help but laugh at all the folks complaining that the brakes on their vehicle work too well....LOL
