brake hydroboost motor

Hi all,

I ran a search on the brake hydroboost electric motor and came up with some ideas as to what my problem is. I have a hum that sounds like it is behind the dash but after popping the hood I saw that the little golden colored pump/motor thing was what was running. You can actually watch it vibrate. In my search I saw that a lot of people have experienced this. My issue is that the motor is cycling on about once a minute especially when it is colder out. I can also feel the motor running as a vibration in my brake pedal. I'm thinking that the fact that the motor is running once a minute or so is a problem that needs addressed. Do you guys think that it could be the master cylinder? or accumulator? seems like I am not holding enough pressure somewhere so the motor is having to over compensate. I dont want to burn up the pump as I bet it is not cheap. I just want to be as well educated on this issue as I can be so when I take it to the shop I can explain exactly what is wrong. I dont want to say I dont trust the shops in my small town..but.....it would be better if I could just go in and tell them what I want them to do. Please help me out.

The problem is that any shop you take it to is going to be guessing also, even it ends up being a dealership. Toyota does not provide diagnostic information in testing the Hydraboost unit and recommends replacement as an entire unit.

That being said, individual parts are available from Toyota and there is a very detailed procedure for tearing a unit down and rebuilding it.

I think you are correct in your assumption that the unit is not holding pressure or at least the ABS module doesn't think it is. How long does the motor run for when it kicks on? Also, do you feel a change in brake pedal feel or stopping efficiency?

The motor only runs for about 5 to 8 seconds. The frequency of it running like I said is about once a minute though. With the brake pedal I can tell when the motor kicks on by the vibration in the brake pedal and it may slightly push back at me. If it does it is very slight. I have not noticed a noticible difference in stopping efficiency. My warranty states that it covers hydroboost brake systems and master cylinder. Like I said though the shops around here are not all that swift and the closest dealer is 2 and a half hours away.

Ok so this problem is getting a lot worse. Now the electric accumulator motor thing is turning on and running every 10 seconds. It is putting quite the draw on the t4r's electrical system as I can watch my lights go dim every 10 seconds now. What a pita this thing is turning out to be.

What was your resolution. I have the exact same problem.

my hydro boost unit is also running about every minute as well.

as I recall the "resolution" is to replace the unit...you can try the flush or the 50 bake peddle press but neither have worked for me.

My solution was to replace the entire hydroboost unit. At first I was quoted 3,000 dollars just for the part. (that's what I get for living here in Craig Colorado where everything is a rip-off) I found it later for 1700 dollars new not counting labor. Instead I found a used unit with a guarantee for 600. Plus another 400 to have it installed. So I got away with a 1,000 dollar fix. Still sucks....Good luck

If you had a warranty that covered hydro boost why did you pay out of pocket?

I am currently fighting them for that exact reason. It is a 3rd party warranty and as usual they just dont want to pay. They claim that since it is a electrically driven pump that goes along with the ABS that it is not covered. They also state that if I had paid the extra 2500 dollars to upgrade the plan then it "probably" would have been covered. I have been in talks with the BBB and they are investigating. I also got in touch with the insurance commission of Colorado and they too are investigating and putting together a case supposedly

I fail to see their point in this matter. If the ABS system & Brake system is covered under their terms the HydraBoost unit is covered completely by their definition. The entire unit can only be replaced as a whole assembly (Again, this is what Toyota recommends instead of individual component replacement.) This is a safety issue that affects both the braking system and ABS systems operation and is part of the Brake & ABS system ASSEMBLY. They can pick flies off the shit all they want, but the reality is they have to replace that entire unit as an assembly, the dealer won't tear down the unit to replace that component (as they are going by what Toyota wants them to do) and I would not recommend an independent shop attempt that repair (not because I think their incompetent, but because the information and tools required to do a proper repair are something they will most likely not have access to.)

By the way, is this a true 3rd party Warranty or just a "Toyota Extended-Care?"

It is a true 3rd party warranty through Zurrick. I agree with you Blackworks and this is why I have had to get the commission involved. It is funny as the part number that was replaced covers the entire unit. Yet the policy clearly states that it covers hydroboost components along with the actuator and pump. Yet when I tell them the part number they say it is not covered....

Do you mind telling me where you found the parts for Hydroboost? This just happened to me yesterday and Toyota wants to charge me over $4000 to fix brakes and replace hydroboost system!!

Unfortunately you can not replace the parts. My understanding is that this was an over-engineered part with lots of O-rings. Basically when it fails you have to replace the entire unit. This may have changed by now so maybe somebody else can chime in if that is the case. Otherwise I would call local junkyards to see if they have one in stock and go that route. Best of luck.

Nope you can repair them. I found a local shop here that is rebuilding my motor for $200.

Here is the pump with the motor still attached. Two screws and they are separated. The brushes where worn about half in 200K. The second picture shows the burnt commutator.

Are they repairing the solenoid packs/hydraulic system as well or just repairing the motors?

While some motors are the failure point, other failures are usually attributed to the hydraulic portion failing; of which a reliable source of parts has not been found as far as I know.

Maybe I am confused, being long side of 50 it happens more and more every year.
I am talking about the brake booster motor on a master cylinder like this:
The only thing that I am repairing is the motor. The commutator was burned. Before the unit failed completely the motor started spinning slower, not as fast, and it was quieter too. It helped to compare the sounds when I had another T4R right next to it of the same year.

I understand what you're talking about, I was just curious if the company you referenced was strictly motor repair only or if they were able to source additional parts. The reason I asked was more for getting an idea if other parts are available as the motor is not always the component that fails.

i once remember not hearing the the brake pump running when the truck was newly purchased but now its more pronounced when i turn the ignition on and when i pressed the brake after startup. would this mean a brake hydroboost pump getting old ? does anyone with a new hydroboost a less pump noise?

Possible and most likely it's just the electric motor portion which can be replaced wearing out, cheaper than the entire assembly but still not cheap, any electric motor will get more noisier as the brushes and commutator wear down.
