brake hydroboost motor

i once remember not hearing the the brake pump running when the truck was newly purchased but now its more pronounced when i turn the ignition on and when i pressed the brake after startup. would this mean a brake hydroboost pump getting old ? does anyone with a new hydroboost a less pump noise?

just an update after the brake fluid flush, the noise was greatly reduced. i must have done something right.

Hydrobooster Pump

My solution was to replace the entire hydroboost unit. At first I was quoted 3,000 dollars just for the part. (that's what I get for living here in Craig Colorado where everything is a rip-off) I found it later for 1700 dollars new not counting labor. Instead I found a used unit with a guarantee for 600. Plus another 400 to have it installed. So I got away with a 1,000 dollar fix. Still sucks....Good luck

Sorry just seen this post. I had someone install it because I was told it needed to be bled in a certain order for all the solenoids. Makes sense but im not sure how true it is.

Hello, I had the same symptoms on a 06 4runner ( 197K miles). The pump would build pressure every 12 seconds or so, followed by a very bizarre sounding screech sound then stop, and repeat.

I wound up purchasing a new accumulator from Toyota. It took literally 3 minutes to remove the old one and install the new one. Just be sure to remove the pressure from the system per the FSM before removing the accumulator.

The pump builds, and holds pressure normally now, and no further issues ever since.

On a used unit it's very possible that you may not have to have a shop with the proper service tool to bleed the system as the solenoids may not have to be triggered/opened if the unit didn't get any air in it, so a normal bleeding could work fine.

Yes the Factory Service Manual. I will save you the trouble though.
Just turn off the ignition, pump the brakes like 20 times and that will do it. do not turn the key to on or you will have to repeat the process.

also put a rag under the accumulator in an attempt to keep any brake fluid off of the paint or anything else. A very , very small amount came out of the pump during the swap.

I did not bleed my brakes afterwards, and have had zero issues.


The 400.00 dollar accumulator sure beat the 3500.00 quote from Toyota to fix the issue.

I know it's an old thread, but it didn't make sense to start a new one.
I, too, just lost my hydro boost unit.
My usual mechanic refused the job, as he did one previously and didn't want to get into the work of tearing the dash apart.
Took it to my son's mechanic, who took the job.
He did more diagnostics and discovered that the motor had seized.
After a week of searching the web, he finally found a place that sells the motor only.

So, I am paying just under $500 for the motor
rather than $3200 to replace the entire unit.

I know the labor will cost me a lot...but I am still saving money...

I bought an '05 SR5 V6 a week ago. Runs great, stops great, looks great, despite 195K miles on it. But the past couple of days of driving it I have started to notice a clunking sound like a solenoid actuating, or a pump moving something, in the area of the driver side firewall. It happens about every 10 seconds. It happens when the key is in the on position but not running. It happens once I start the vehicle. It happens when I'm driving down the road. I can feel the cycling thunk every 10 seconds. I'm wondering if this the brake pump. Maybe the accumulator isn't holding pressure so the motor has to keep kicking on every 10 seconds. I'm trying to figure out what I can do to diagnose what the sound is, what is going on and how to fix it.

Update!
My truck's brake booster is fixed!
I bought the motor online for just under $500...
and the labor (+ oil change) was $485.
So, for less than $1000
I solved a problem that would have cost me THOUSANDS more if I had replaced the whole unit.
The best part is, I can drive my 4R again!
I've been driving my wife's tiny Hyundai Tiburon for more than a month...
and I won't miss trying to climb in and out of that clown car!
