Brake lights wont work please help.

So like the title says, brake lights wont work. Third brake light work, tail light work, turn signal works. The brake light and reverse lights don't work. It cant be the brake pedal switch as the third light works. Its not any of the fuses, unless there is a hidden one. I did check stop light fuses etc. I was messing with it and it turned on for a sec and turned back off. These bulbs don't connect to a direct wire harness or anything in the 5th gen so not sure where to check for a bad connection. One more thing I noticed my rear windshield wiper washer insist working either. There is water, front works, rear doesn't. ONLY wipers turn on. I'm thinking there is an electrical issue in the trunk.

You've been on here long enough to know best search technique. I've seen more than one thread for this problem.

Well the bulbs are in a socket that does have wires connected to it. And, those wires run in a harness as part of the lighting circuit. So, I don't know what you meant by your comment. If you look you will find threads where people have had issues with the crimps on the wires in those sockets and checking and recrimping solved their issue. Granted, it's odd to have both go out at the same time.

I suggest you download the wiring manual from the sticky that Nashman posted. His is for an earlier 4Runner, but it's 5gen so should be the same or close. Since you didn't include your model and year I dunno. Anyway it's basic troubleshooting here to find the issue. I'd start by removing the bulbs and checking the voltage at the socket. I just had an issue in my old Nissan with one tail light not working. A check showed only 8v - not enough to light the bulb when a continuity check showed the wire good. Good Luck.

Both pumps are in the front.

Check for damage to your trailer harness.

Philsey has a good point. The problem I described above was due to a partially damaged wire in the hitch harness installed by Uhaul 20 years ago! So you never know!
