Brake Pad/Rotor Recommendations

Developed a pretty nasty braking wobble. Had rotors resurface and pads replaced last year and it's set in pretty hard over the last 12mo.

Going to go ahead with a rotor replacement in the next few weeks.

I searched but everything was TBU and I can't really afford to buy calipers and whatnot at the moment.

So, stock size 16" wheels on an 00 Limited, what are the best brands for rotors and pads?

I do a lot of highway driving and have checked out Centric and Brembo.

Does drilling make a difference? Or slots? Cryo treated?

For what's it worth, I installed brembo rotors and ebc green stuff pads and I still wasn't pleased. Experienced bad brake fade coming down a canyon. This was even with as much engine braking I could safely muster out of the situation. They just didn't feel has stout as the 231mm TBU that I have now. Only had the brembo rotors for 1k and tossed them.
 
OEM TOYOTA brake pads (nothing else)

Rotors can be any brand, but avoid the drilled etc., OEM is best but they are about $87 a piece on ebay.

For 16 inch wheels, you need 319 mm rotor (not 297 mm which is for 15 inch wheels)
 
Brembo and Performance Friction pads worked well for me before the TBU. All for $150 if I remember correctly.

No need for fancy rotors IMHO.
 
While you got the truck up in the air, go and check to make sure the back drums are properly adjusted also. Wont make sense to burn up your brand new front setup if its doing all the braking and overheating.
And I second the OEM suggestion.

OEM rotors are on camelback for like 50 each, that doesn't seem so bad. Pads aren't too bad either.

Anyone had luck w/ akenobo pads?

How do I adjust rear drums? They were done last year, but maybe thats the bigger problem?

I'm running Akenobo pads and they're very good. You have to bed them in several times before you get their best performance. OEM rotors are the way to go too.
 
I bought some rather generic-looking parts-counter rotors, but got the most expensive pads Autozone sells, and after a good and thorough bedding-in, they're as good as, if not better than OEM.

Wear is nice and even. I do see some fade at highway speeds during emergency braking, but also had that with OEM. They produce more dust than the OEMs, but overall, I'd buy them again.


The generic rotors, on the other hand, tend to build up considerably more rust than the OEMs did, which has caused my rims to stick to the rotors making them somewhat difficult to remove, so for that I recommend some grease or anti seize. They appear to be wearing quicker than the OEMs as well, so I might go with OEM once these are up for a replacement.
 
I think I'm just concerned about uneven bedding. I'll probably pull my rotors (not sure if they're original or what) and see if they are substantial enough to have turned or not.

I get pretty hard vibration through the steering wheel when braking at highway speeds but not enough to make me feel like I'm losing control yet.

It is insanely annoying.

What combos have given people the best results?
 
If you can. Wait and save up for the TBU. Stopped all annoying brake wobbles for my 97 runner with 16 rims. You won't be replacing front brake stuff every year if you upgrade to TBU. And prob do the brake lines while you're at it.

I am a BIG fan of Hawk LTS pads. I haven't put them on my 4runner yet but I have had them on several of my trucks and haven't been happier with any other pad. They do need bedded in properly, but if you do start to get pulsing, they are easy to rebed and smooth them back out.
 
Put on Brembo rotors and Akebono brake pads that I got on Amazon about 2 years ago. About $160 all in at the time might be a little pricier now. 40,000 km later and still very happy with them. The key is bedding them. Mind u my rig doesn't carry any extra armor and the tires are 265/75 Duratracs. Just my $.02
