Brake pedal Hiss

Have a 2011 T4R SR5 4x4. Brake pedal makes a hissing noise everytime it is pressed. Kinda annoying. My buddies 2010 FJ Cruiser does the same thing. Searched the forum - didn't turn up anything on this subject. Any ideas?

Searched and came up with 24 threads started on brakes in the 5th Gen Section.Use Advance search to narrow it down not that "Google custom search" BS.

The hissing sound is related to the small pressure vessel that is a part of the emergency breaking boost. In normal breaking, when you press lightly and slowly, the vessel let's the air out through the relief valve.

In a panic stop, when you hit the breaks fast and hard, the air pressure initiates the break modulation before escaping through the valve. That's why when you hit the breaks hard, they seem to grab.

So, in normal breaking, you 'll hear that little hiss, or swish. You don't hear it in panic breaking because of all of the cursing and yelling going on.

I have a 4th Generation & it's been like that since Day One.

I never addressed the sound to Toyota, I just lived w/ it & ignored it.

So i have my 2016 SR5 for 3 years and never noticed the hissing sound or at least the hissing sound only lasted 1-2 seconds?

I have just changed the rear brakes on Memorial day weekend and since then, i keep hearing the hissing sound and it would last 5-8 seconds it seems like.. Braking has been fine after the brake change. But the hissing sounds on the VERY FIRST press on the brake.. Any subsequent pressing of the brake to test the sound does not create the hissing sound. Only the very first press after while without pressing the brake.

While changing the rear pads, one of the cylinder was bad and was leaking brake fluid while i was test driving slowing around the neighborhood... RAN OUT of brake fluid and almost couldn't stop... Immediately after, i fixed the leak and applied brake fluid and has since been fine except i keep hearing the hissing sound..

Did i get air into the system? would a fluid bleed fix it?

I just found out that the reservoir is empty. And, I plan to refill fluid and replace all pads and rotors this weekend. Where did you see the leaking exactly? How did you stop the leaking?

Saw the reply Fuzzylogic made. So this sound cannot be fixed? Bringing it into a dealership tomorrow to see what they say.
