Brake squeal common?

I'm only 1000 miles into Gen 5 ownership, so dont have a great data set yet.

Noticing significant brake squeal after a parked period. Not just the typical overnight oxidation-type stuff that buffs off after the first brake application, but an ear piercing squeal for several stops, even after a parked period as short as a few hours.

Granted, here in the land of Lake Effect Frozen Tundra we've been getting snow, temps in the teens, and the accompanying dosage of road salt for the last month. But this seems excessive, and way more than all my previous vehicles.

Is this issue common among the Gen 5 community? Thoughts on other potential problems that I should dig into? (I havent made a dealer stop as my dealer of origin is 35 miles away, and the dealer 4 miles away is notoriously un-trustworthy for service. Regardless, would like to make my own educated guess first.)

Appreciate all your advice and experience.

Brake Squeal

No, the squeal is not common. Assuming it is a new 5th gen take it to the dealer under warranty and have it checked out.
 
My first post...

I purchased a new silver 2012 SR5 in Nov 2012. We have been having a cold winter here in SLC (many mornings below 20F this winter), and I do hear a little brake squeal for the first two stops on cold mornings. Then it goes away.

Took the SR5 on its first road trip to St George, UT this past weekend (kids soccer tourneys)... AM temps were a little warmer (around freezing), and I don't recall hearing the squeal. So I am hoping its just an overnight cold sort of thing.

A little background... Tho' my current 4Runner is new, I am not new to 4Runners. Bought a 1st gen '88 (with soft top, manual transmission, manual locking hubs, and whopping 2.3 liter 4 cylinder engine) in the fall of '87, and drove it 135K miles in 13 years before trading it in for an '01 Sequoia. 11 years and 98K miles later, I traded in the Sequoia for my new Runner. Although I don't put a lot of miles on my cars (relative to other folks), a lot of the miles are pulling an old Clackacraft drift boat, or bouncing down rough dirt tracks to my favorite fishing spots.
 
Had a bit of squeal for a minute (2-3 times or so??) after I went through some giant puddles (I live in Seattle), it's gone now, I've got about 1900 miles on my 4runner.
 
My Limited was purchased last week - only 318 miles on it.
After several hours of 47* outside, brake squeal is apparent, but only for a couple of stops.
 
I just had my brake squeak fixed yesterday at dealer along with my 20k Toyota care service.
My TE started brake squeak when it coming to a complete stop about 6 month ago. Dealer was able to confirmed the noise and performed the following according to the write up:

"cleaned and lube front brake pads and rotors; Brake Caliper grease"

The noise is gone after the service.
 
Once in a while when it's really cold. But after few stops, brake squel is gone :)

Like what other fellow forum members said, bring it to the dealer if squel is persistent.
 
I know I’m bumping an old thread, but I seem to be having the same issue with my 2021 Gen 5. I haven’t been able to find much information out there on the cause of this issue, and wanted to know if others have resolved this and what the cause could be.

In my case, after a day of work where my car sits parked for several hours in an outdoor lot, my 4Runner will release a piercing squeak when applying break pressure at low mph. I park in a very busy lot and it is quite embarrassing.

I live in St Louis and it does get quite humid in the summers, it’s very noticeable after rain, and now that the cold months are here, it continues to persist.

When I took it in for my 5k service, the service rep stated that it is normal under these conditions. This can’t be the case, I never hear other vehicles with it this bad and I’ve never personally had a vehicle do this.

Pretty common for rust to form on rotors in wet conditions, I bet that is what is causing it. Get some brake cleaner and clean all four rotors and all 8 pad surfaces. check your shims and clips, grease the pins while in there.

The only time i get squeal is after car sits after driving in rain, but it only squeals at first then goes away. Also, the pads that dealers slap on during brake service are not the same as the factory pads, and they definitely squeal. Might check the part numbers to see what is on there. If they aren't the factory pads, you might be fighting a losing battle. there is a thread in this forum if you can find it confirming this. mine is a 2012, and the pads I use are 04465-60320 F and 04466-60140 R.

See my above post there is a bulletin for brake squeal. The dealer should have taken care of that if they knew what they were doing, provided it happens during cooler weather.

On my 2021 5th Gen with 13k miles, no squeal ever.

On my old 2012 Range Rover with brand new OEM brakes and rotors, they start squeaking in 1000 miles or less. It’s embarrassing.

Check your discs not just for rust but for a yellow varnish. Some kind of byproduct from certain brakes heating up builds up on the rotor surface and causes this.

My 2021 squealed terribly when I first got it in the spring. Haven’t heard it in a while - not sure if the dealer addressed it at my 5K service or the conditions haven’t caused it to squeal in a while. It was embarrassing first thing in the morning at a campground… in a brand new vehicle no less.
 
My 21 TRD Off Road every cold morning or after rain first sometimes 2nd light stop front brakes are loud as hell.
($h!t brake pads) i want to replace them with better pads but I’m waiting till summer to do it. I have a friend that went to the dealer they replaced the brakes on his 21 Venture only to have it happen a few weeks later, he replaced the pads with a premium set of pads & no more cold stop noise. I paid close to 50 grand for crummy front brakes, loud diesel sounding engine, cheap stock tires, slight steering shake some times at 50 to 60 mph, & now I’m just waiting for the front diff needle bearing noise & vibration to start one day.
Other than these 5 things I absolutely love this environmentally friendly green emission gas guzzling rig.

I am going to look this up as this is great news. I have had two 2021 TRD Pro’s this year (sold the first one) and they both squeaked. It doesn’t matter what season or what condition. And I agree that it is completely embarrassing!!!!

Anyone know the TSB number by chance?
