Brake sticking on take off

Hello everyone. Newbie here...just bought a "new to me" 2008 4Runner SR5...slight problem with my brakes (or at least I think it's the brakes). This is the situation:

When I brake hard and even sometimes brake normally to a dead stop...as soon as I get started again I the sensation that the break is not releasing right away. It seems like it takes a second or so and then it kinda pops and shudders the vehicle slightly. It does this quite a bit. It's not that bad, but i'm thinking it should be checked out since it's definitly not normal.

Just wondering if any one else has had that problem and what was wrong??

mine does this too. not all the time, but sometimes when the light turns green and i come off the brake and press the gas, it kinda jumps a bit. not sure why!

If so, do a search for "drive shaft" and maybe noise/thump/thunk/clunk. What you're describing kind of sounds a little like it could be this behavior. If you check your manual you'll find maintenance instructions about lubricating the drive shaft and the search here should turn up multiple threads on how to actually do it. That should mitigate or even eliminate the thump. Supposedly there's a permanent fix for the Lexus GX (same drive train), but it's not officially available for the 4Runner. When I was still using the dealer for oil changes, they would also lube the drive shaft when I asked. I'm not sure what they did differently the last time, but it's probably going on at least 15,000 miles and the thump hasn't returned...started doing my own changes again after that visit, but the thump usually returned about the time I was due for an oil change.

The 4Runner also has a Hill Start Assist feature. The only indication I have that mine seems to be working is seeing other vehicles roll back when the light turns green...mine just stays planted until I press the gas after releasing the brake. I suppose if something got out of adjustment with the system it might not release immediately when you touch the gas, creating the sensation you described.

i never posted anything about this because i thought it was normal. its hard to describe the feeling. the best i can say is after pressing the gas from a dead stop the truck kinda jumps. its not bad and probably cant even be noticed unless your the driver. theres no sound of a thud or anything, just a small "jump" forward.... im gonna wait for it to happen again and try to get a better explanation
 
NJRunner...seems like we have the same problem. Just a slight pop after break release...

RiverWolf...thanks for the tip. I'll definitely go get my next service at the dealership and see how the driveshaft lube affects it.

You now got me thinking about the Hill Start Assist....I was stop on a fairly heavy incline a few weeks ago and when I let go of the gas, the truck rolled backwards and I heard all kinds of funky electronic gearing going on...but it didn't stop it from rolling backwards. I thought it was ABS that was not meant to go backwards in "Drive gear"...

So your saying that Hill Start Assist should definitely stop the truck from rolling backwards?? I'll try it again today...looks like I might have to bring this in for a looking to at the dealership..thank god it's still under waranty!!

Hill Start Assist is only ASSIST!!! not stopping....if the hill is mild it will hold u back...if the hill is steep you will roll for sure. The primary point of the feature is so when you are going from the brake to the gas peddle (from a stop) you don't roll backwards into the vehicle behind you. Basically you will not roll back as far compared to a vehicle without it. This is helpful if you have a manual transmission or live in places like San Fran.

If you are not sure if the feature is working look at your indicator light...it will flash when this is happening.
 
Yes, I too am having this problem with an '08 SR5. I will have the dealer lube the drive shaft next time I go in and see if that solves it.
 
Just sounds like the driveline clunk to me. It's normal (sadly) and happens most often after hard braking.

I'm not really convinced this is normal because it happens after soft braking as well.

Correct, however, after hard braking or acceleration, it occurs more predominantly.

That's what I have been trying to tell you. If it were harmful, there would have been a recall to fix the problem since it is VERY common.
 
Sorry to bring up an old thread, but im noticing this issue with my 2008 sr5. I thought it may have been either a brake pad/caliper sticking or the transmission :confused:, it really freaked me out when I first felt it. Has anyone confirmed what this is? Any confirmed fixes? Has anyone else noticed the issue?

Driveline clunk, harmless, have them lube it if you want it to be reduced.

V8 or V6? Sometimes the when in 4hi, if the driveshafts haven't been greased recently, there's a bit of binding and it thumps as you accelerate from a stop.

Cool... Use it or lose it! :D Do use 4hi and 4lo monthly or so. 4hi for a few miles, I think Toyota says 10miles. 4lo just long enough to cycle it in and out of 4lo. The beauty of the 4th gen T4R is you can do it on dry pavement. No need to to "exercise" the center diff lock as that gets done when you transition from 2hi to 4hi and back...
