Brake Upgrade Recommendations

I have a 98 Limited with the factory 6 spoke 16" wheels. I am going to have a trusted, local repair shop replace the brakes and will see if they will do the upgrade for me. I am trying to decide between the 199mm vs 231mm. I use it as my daily driver as well as towing a 5x8 enclosed trailer with 2 dirt bikes and gear throughout the Midwest. I like that the 199mm does not require the modification as the 231mm but would prefer the larger ones. Just concerned if the shop will do the mods need for the 231mm.

What are everyone's recommendation?

Also, I know the stock spare will not fit with the 231mm. Will the 199mm work will the stock full size spare?

If you plan on keeping those wheels, I would just go with the 199 - still a big improvement over what you have, and you wouldn't have to mess with altering them. I know that some will say they've done it and had no problems, but I wouldn't. Just my opinion.
As far as whether or not the factory spare will fit over the 199, I can't remember anyone saying one way or the other. If someone confirms that it won't fit, you can find a used 6 spoke pretty cheap on CL - see them all the time.

From what I know the 6 spoke wheels clear the 231mm with no issues. The shop would only need to cut some of the dust shield and that is it. Its the older 3 split spoke like I have that dont clear.
 
231mm

the only real mod is the cutting the dust shield. Everything is pretty straightforward.

My oem disc warped and had the brake shake after towing few times. I love my new 231mm.

OP will have to confirm, but are we talking about these wheels?

If so, I don't think they will clear the 231 without modification or spacers.

if you want a rotor/pad recommendation try the EBC 3GD Rotors with EBC greenstuff pads, I love them! excellent braking.

I have those wheels and went with the 199s because the spare doesn't fit the 231s, and because I didn't like the idea of grinding the wheels. I don't do any towing, but I would think the 199s are still plenty.
 
I have those wheels... If I need to do brake work, my plan it to keep the wheels, do the 231mm Tundra brakes, and get longer rear wheel studs for the front. I will add a 1/4" spacer and still be able to thread the lug nuts on enough.
 
Another happy 199mm owner on split spokes, I likewise didn't want the hassle of worrying about wheel clearance. Ordered rebuilt Tundra calipers for about $75 a side off ebay, put on Brembo blank rotors and Advics (Japanese supplier of OE Tundra pads as I understand). Simple, one evening, 'one beer' job.

Thanks for the clarification.

I think I'm going to go with the 199mm's. I know the 199's have 13WE on the caliper. Is there a specific part numbers I can tell the shop? Or just tell them calipers, pads, and rotors off a 2001 Tundra?

It should come up on the listing for the caliper what the casting is, 13WE or 13WL. They should be able to tell you easily.
 
Last month I upgraded to the 231 because I tow a boat and the stock brakes suck under load. I found a set of '05 Tundra wheels on CL for $200 and '05 tundra calipers from a wreck for $45 each. I looked up Speedy's garage on youtube & everything works as described there and on this site.
I haven't towed yet with the 231's but I can tell already it is a huge improvement from stock.
 
Thanks everyone for the responses. Right now I'm trying to find a local shop to do the upgrade but having a difficult time. If I can't find one that will do it I'll do it myself.
 
I found a shop that will do it. They said they would do the 231mm for less then $40 more then the 199's. Will the 231mm calipers fit the split 3 wheels after they are ground down or do you need to run spacers with the split 3's regardless?

Are you planning on grinding the wheels or the calipers?
 
IF you are set on keeping the split spokes then I would just get the 199's. They use the same rotor as the 231s which is ultimately where our trucks have problems as the factory ones warp. I ran 199s on my '02 Tacoma and they were a fantastic upgrade over stock. [MENTION=73515]ajonesnv[/MENTION] runs 199s on his 3rd gen which gets loaded with camping gear and he has no issues. You can always get the 231 calipers& pads later if you upgrade your wheels down the road and sell the 199 calipers to someone with split spokes.
