Brake!- VSC OFF- VSC TRAC- ABS All on, NO CEL Though

Hello all, hope everyone's Thanksgiving was great. My 01 SR5 4x4 with 183k was sitting for more than a week and and the Brake!- VSC OFF- VSC TRAC- ABS lights all came on. No check engine light though and no codes, but the center high mount brake light was out. (coincidence?) I checked all the fuses vacuum hoses under the hood and re-tightened the gas cap. Drove the truck the next morning and all the lights went out. I thought it was a loose gas cap (gas cap is oem 2 years old) and was on my way. Filled up the tank and parked it. This morning, 5 minutes down the road, wifey tells me All lights back on again. I have replace the charcoal canister already about a year ago. I have seen this issue on the forums, but WITH the CEL on, not off like mine. Would this be a brake switch issue? Any advice would be appreciated. :thanks:

I would pull the codes... to ensure what is going on. My 01 LX recently had a VSC issue but that was due to a recalibration of the yaw sensor it wasn't happy with.

However, Toyotas tend to show multiple light failures when an alternator goes out. You could be experiencing low voltages...

Pull the ABS codes. Remember that's a different procedure that OBD codes, an OBD scanner will not read ABS codes

VSC, TRAC, and ABS lights sounds like a potential issue with the ABS system. Gas cap and charcoal canister should be totally unrelated. As recommended, pull the ABS codes to see what the car thinks is the issue. There are all sorts of things that could be the problem.

Also, just to be sure you realize, the ABS/brake system on your 01 is totally different to all 96-00 trucks. 01s and 02s have a completely different (and more complex) ABS/traction control system that is more similar to the modern Toyotas. It uses an electric motor and pump to build vacuum for brake assist and ABS/traction control brake application, rather than engine vacuum. It's also able to brake individual wheels to aid traction...hence the complexity.

Thanks for the response. How do I pull ABS codes? As you stated, my OBDII reader won't pick that up. And, yeah, I am sorry I didn't pick up a 96-00 4Runner. I had to replace the leaking master cylinder once already with a junk yard one 3 years ago. Very complex and unnecessary if you ask me. Thanks again

Thanks to all that replied as I found the problem. Seems the drivers side rear shock blew through the rusted shock tower shredding some wires (ABS?) with it. So it looks like I have bigger problems than I originally thought. Not even sure if it can be fixed due to the rust back there. Thanks again

Ahh, yes. I’ve heard of that happening before. The upper shock mount brackets on the frame are available from Toyota. If the rest of the frame/truck is still serviceable, it is possible to remove and replace the rusted out upper mount. Lot of work and no fun, however.

That bracket can be fixed. I have fixed them. Getting it into position and making it solid can be fun. As mostly that upper control arm bracket needs strengthening along with the frame rail. if yours isnt horribly rotted you can weld washers in there and build the plate back up to hold the shock but those plates are fairly thick.

Some folks even outboard the shocks. I have seen a few users do that as well.

I take it you didn't rust proof your frame for living in the rust belt and it got you.

It happens, that why I end up rebuilding the frames on these 3rd gens.. ;-)

Would be nice if you lived close by. You seem to know how to fix these issues. Only had this 4runner 2-3 years now and hit it with fluid film every fall so I'm guessing the damage was already done before I got it. I have no way of fixing this myself. Will have to bring it in and hope for the best.

Yes quite possible. All mine were previous owner neglect. Hope you can get her patched up.
