Brakes not gripping

Hey all,

I've had my 08 4runner for about 6 weeks now and the brakes just don't feel as grippy as they should be. I have to push it at least around 1/2 way down to get any change in the speed. Anyone have this problem? It's only got 1100 miles on it.

Also, at a stop light, the pedal is to the floor, and even if it's up a few milimeters, it starts to roll foward.

Are you referring to the play w/o any resistance in the pedal for a good inch or so. If that's the case, its normal.

Yeah I guess that's what I'm talking about, but lets say i'm doing 65-70 on the highway and about to take the exit. I'll push the pedal down about halfway and barely get any difference in speed. It could just be me, but it just feels like the 4R is pushin'

Again the inch or so of play is normal. On mine, i press until I feel resistance which is no where near half way but there sure is some play. Again its normal.

Perhaps you have air in your brake lines.

Since your truck is new, bring it back to the dealer & have them flush & bleed your brakes.

Maybe it's a bad master cylinder or brake booster as well.

Toyotas are awesome...but you never know. And since it's under warranty, get it taken care of. Cost nothing to you.

Thanks for the response guys, I'll call the dealership tomorrow and see what they can do. It's kinda scary sometimes!

It sounds to me like air in the lines, too.

Your brakes don't sound right at all. Even though EskimoChaos is right about an inch or so of play, putting the pedal down halfway just to get any form of decel is unacceptable. I would guess, like everyone else, is that you have air in the lines. Take it back to the dealer and have them bleed it out. For comparison sake, I have an '07 that is now 15 months old and the brake pedal still responds to the touch. It was one of the first things I noticed and loved about this truck vs. any others that I had is the resonsiveness and power of these brakes.

hey everyone,

I called the dealer this past weekend and th service guy said that my brakes "are still new and need to be broken in" after 1100 miles? is this right? doesn't sound like it to me...
