Brakes on Sport vs. Limited

I had found out on here that the new Sport has larger disks than the others (thanks!), but does that not include the Limited? Since both the Sport & the Limited have the 17" wheels, it would seem the Limited would have the larger brakes too.

-Haven't been able to find anything on this.

In the dumb question dept: Where does one get the actual height measurement for tires? I measure the 16" tires on my truck, and to the hub it comes out about 14". My 15" car tires measure actual about 13". What am I missing?

UPDATE: In looking at Carsdirect.com, it looks like they make no distinction between the size of wheels on the SR5, Sport or Limited. This is with new 2004s. Thoughts?

I can't comment on your brake question but as for the tire/wheel height...

If I understand your question correctly (sorry early morning still sipping on coffee), the 16" refers to just the wheel, not the wheel and tire combo. For instance, my Dodge has 16" wheels (measured from one side to the other across the middle) but the tires are 33" tall) measured from the ground to the top of the tire.

Does that make sense?

Thai - you are just a wealth of information. Are you this site's originator?

I think I had looked at that site with the Sport brakes, but when you get old the memory is the 2nd thing to go (& I can't remember the 1st).

Regarding tire/rim size, if I understand this right: So if someone said they were getting an extra inch of ground clearance from going to the 17" wheels, they really would only be getting 1/2 inch on account of the radius measurement. Right?

Not really, it would depend on what tires they put on those rims. For example, the stock wheels on a 2004 SR5 are 265/70-16 while on the Sport they are 265/65-17. The sport has tires on a 17 inch rim while the SR5 tires are on a 16 inch rim but this does not mean that the Sport has another 1/2 inch of ground clearance. In fact the two have the same ground clearance. This is because the wheels on the Sport use a tire with a smaller sidewall height than the SR5 and this almost exactly compensates for the larger rim.

OK, this explains why they wouldn't have to adjust the speedometer, as the tires would be same size.

However, with less sidewall, the tires should give a little better performance. It also explains why the larger rim tires don't cost that much more.

I guess it depends on what type of performance you are looking for. The smaller sidewall may give you slightly better cornering and emergency handling on pavement but you will lose significantly in ride comfort and offroad capability. Mostly I think the only reason to want thin sidewall tires is because they look "cool".

Actually, less or stronger sidewall is advantageous for towing. It cuts down side to side flex which promotes trailer wagging. That's why it's recommended to use a light truck tire for towing - reinforced sidewall.

I wonder what the dealer would say if I told them I wanted to change the 17" P tires to 17" LT?

dcampen is correct. When talking ground clearance & vehicle height, you need to know information about BOTH the rim size AND tire measurements.

The dealer would not say anything if you wanted LT-tires. My '02 4runner has LT-tires in stock size. Dealer cannot do anything...because it does not affect anything except your wallet. LT-tires are heavier and stronger...thus, they cost more, but you will decrease your fuel economy (heavier). Handling and braking maybe worst with LT-tires because you are increasing unsprung weight.

My 2004 SR5 4Runner came with an option package that included 17" alloy rims. I knew that the stock rims were 16", as was stated in another post.

I had a set of 245-70 R16" Bridgestone Winter Duelers from my previous Nissan, and wanted a set of steel rims for winter tires. The tire shop was not going to order me 16" rims as they stated 'if there were 17" rims on the vehicle, I would have to get 17" winter rims'. I told them the difference in rotor sizes with the Sport, and told them to order the 16's. They did and they fit fine.

Interesting is that I used my GPS to check speedo accuracy with the stock 17" rims, noting accuracy at 100 km (62 mph). My 16's have a bit less circumferance, and I expected about a 3.5% speedo error, but my GPS indicated accuracy of about 1% deviation from the speedo. Any ideas?

As I stated, the Winter Dueler's are 245 70 R 16. The installed tires were 265 65 R17. According to the calculator I looked at, a 3.5% speedo error was to be expected by going to a smaller circumferance tire. However, my GPS does not indicate that?

Is the speedo/odometer not gear driven, or do the speed sensors on the wheels have a function for indicating speed?

Whoops, apparently, i was blind when reading your post....:D

If that is the case, then i have no answer for ya. How accurate is the GPS system?? For me, I would not trust my Magellan in calculating my average speed.

I'm planning on doing something similar for next winter. My SR5 came stock with 16" so I'll put new skins (probably Michelins) on the alloys for summer and move the Dunlop's to steels for winter (without the TPMS.) I saw your steel wheels on another thread and I think they look good. Do you have more details on wheel size/width/offset? Did you have the work done at a stealership (are they actual Toyota's) or a tire shop (aftermarket)? What manufacturer? Last question: approximate cost (Canadian bucks are just fine)?

The retail price on the 'take-off' rims is about $70 each. I bought them at a tire shop. Canadian Tire sells them as well, but I think they are painted black. As I had previously bought other tires from the tire shop, they do not charge me for tire rotations, re-balance or seasonal change-overs. It is warm here in BC, so had my OEM aluminum rims and Dunlops installed two days ago. You will have no trouble getting rims for a reasonable price. By the way, I did have some trouble with the TPMS, and believed that on two ski trips, mud got thrown up between the spare and underbody, as once I cleaned the area around the valve, the light stopped flashing.

There's plenty of information on the 4runner. The Limited model has the same size brakes as SR5. Only the Sport Edition has the big brakes. (BTW, the Lexus GX470 also has the big brakes.)

I believe the Limited gets the bigger breaks if you have the XREAS Suspension.

Any chance of posting a closeup picture of the steel wheel so I can take it with me to my tire guy?
