Brakes - Why do they suck so bad!

I have a ‘14 SR5 and the brake pedal has always been soft. In a panic it goes almost to the floor. Granted the truck eventually stops, but it’s not confidence inspiring.

I just redid the brakes, new rotors and pads - OEM. No improvement. It’s like the master cylinder has a spring or shock in between it and the pedal.

Is everyone else’s 5th Gen the same???

Thanks!

In a panic it goes to the floor because brake assist has taken over because you cant drive

Everyones is the same, assuming you are kicking on the brake assist that often he is not wrong - use slow early braking vs "panicked" and it should behave normally.

How many miles before brake replacements?

He is wrong and rude, simply because I’m not commonly encountering brake assist - in fact it’s only happened twice in the 4 years of ownership.

40k miles for my first brake job. But I do have larger than stock tires, and the brake job was not required, I was trying to achieve a firmer pedal - to no avail.

I’m used to driving sports cars, and race cars that have a more firm pedal pressure and a more linear response.

I could not dig them up but there are a couple treads around here where the brake goes to the floor but iirc in those cases it barely stopped/seemed to loose all brake function, not sure if thats what are you experiencing or its just to much peddle play compared to the other rides

have you looked into replacing the rubber lines with stainless steel braided lines? I hear that helps firm up the pedal but this is just "info-mercial" knowledge I have no real experience.

Mine are a little soft but nothing to crazy. I know braided lines make a massive difference in the bike world, I’ve never put them on cars though.

I put braided lines on with this brake job. No difference.

This right here, and I'm not trying to troll. It is a 4,600 lb full steel BOF truck chassis. It will never brake like what you were used to until you swap to 20 wheels and get oversize calipers and rotors to stuff in there.

That and the fact that computers are controlling so much stuff on these things anymore it's becoming less fun to just "drive".

I didn’t take yours as trolling. Should have also stated that I’ve had a 2003 Ford Excursion on 40’s (8800 lbs) that had better feeling brakes. So I know the difference.

Anyway. Doesn’t sound like anyone has come up with a better feeling pedal package. Like I said, I know the truck stops fine, just the pedal feel sucks.

I agree the “feel” sucks- soft and you can’t tell what the hell is going on. I would be hard pressed to believe that your Exc on 40's stopped in even close to the distance as the 4Runner, despite the better feel, lol.

But- these brakes will stop you really quickly if need be. I think they are fantastic for the application (BOF SUV). My Titan could barely stop while towing my boat- in fact I pushed right into an intersection once trying to stop. Same boat with the 4Runner and it doesn’t even know it’s back there while braking( I have no trailer brakes).

That’s my take after almost 150k.

Fing moron, OP. The brakes are the same size/spec as the Lexus GX460, a car that's yet another 500 lbs heavier.

So if the brakes are good enough for not only a 5,300 lb car, but to have Lexus-quality-satisfying levels of touch and fade-resistance, then perhaps yer doing it wrong.

My wife has a 2016 SR5 Premium and I have a 2076 Off-Road.
Her brakes are a lot more sensitive than mine.
Both original OEM brakes.

Mine don’t feel bad, I guess, just takes more foot pressure than hers.
They’re certainly not as bad as a 2013 Tundra I had.
