Nothing wrong with staying with OEM parts. The Toyota pads, rotors and wiper inserts are top notch.

General consensus is OEM.
I usually buy Akebono because they are the OEM for Toyota and usually are less expensive than the Toyota branded part.
Without more upgrades just stick with OE brake setup.
Ditto on the OEM brake parts. I'm pushing 90K miles on my 2010 Trail, still on the original rotors. Just had them turned a second time with a 2nd set of pads. I live on a very steep hill in a very hilly area, so my brake usage is well above average. I will need to replace the rotors after these next set of pads wear out.

"Doing OEM brakes" is just referring to the parts used. Not the labor.
It depends on how mechanically inclined you are. Many forum members have replaced their own brake pads and rotors. It's really just up to you and if you feel comfortable doing it or not.
You also don't have to take it to the dealership, almost any mechanic shop will do the brake job, however most won't buy OEM parts unless you specifically ask for them.
It's really up to you.

I used StopTech brand rotors and their towing pads, which are a combination ceramic/carbon fiber compound. I found them on Amazon for an insane deal. They’re great and stop better than the worn stock parts, which I saw 90,000 miles out of before one of my rotors warped.
My pads could have easily gone another 10,000 miles, maybe more. That’s insane. I’m satisfied so far with the StopTech brand and I saved a ton of money...we’ll see if that proves to be true long term. The OEM equipment from Toyota is literally unparalleled.

So Im in need to get brakes check and maybe upgraded for my 2013 with 72,000miles here in Colorado. Not car mechanically included, so how best to go about it.
1) Dealer
2) Private Shop
3) National Chain
Does it really matter, can I both my own kit and bring it to Someone? Thanks for this newbie.

either go to the dealer or find a good local private mechanic that has a lot of good reviews and recommendations, and after you find one you like keep going to the same mechanic. national chains might not install parts you provide, but a good independent mechanic usually will. the only downside is they won't warranty those parts since they aren't getting any markup, so if something is wrong with it you're out of pocket to replace it. tell them in advance you will be providing parts.
and OEM brakes are really good, don't "upgrade"
I'm with the OP here... I want to upgrade too. I just replaced pads and rotors about 3 years ago, have driven 50k miles with OEM and now my car shimmies so bad it's virtually unsafe. It's funny how 80% of people have good luck with OEM, and the other 20% of us are pulling our hair out wondering what the hell is going on. Nobody upgrades like the Tundra on the 3rd Gen? I feel like my brakes have always sucked on this 5th gen...
No pun intended, but did you or the person who replaced them install the shim kit?
one of the pistons was locked in each of the front calipers :gun5:
That's why I wanted to upgrade... only the rear discs were getting grabbed :ybrick:
