Hey guys and gals, is anybody out there hearing a "squishy" sound when applying the brakes? It is a very soft sound, like the sound of hydrolic fluid being forced through a small opening. Brakes work fine, dealer says normal, but I have never heard that sound before when braking in the many, many vehicles I have owned over the years. Frankly, I really do not trust my dealer. So, if anybody else has had, or having this experience, let me know. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Yes, I have heard it from day one. Have not asked the dealer about it yet though. I never have heard it before either on any other suv/car I drive/drove. It does sit in the back of my mind. Would be nice to get an answer on this.

I believe it's perfectly normal. My '03 Explorer and '96 Sable made the same sounds (it was just a little quieter in those). I would not be concerned at all - it may have something to do with the enhanced brake assist system for braking in a panic situation.
Thanks Westwind, at least I know I am not the only one. Dealer Mech. said there is 3K psi in the braking system and what I am hearing is the pedal cylinder starting the process of moving fluid to the main cylinders under the hood. He even commented on how big the braking system of the 4 runner is. If you look at your master cylinder area, you will see two "load" hooks, one on each side. He says that the system weighs about as much as a 5 hp lawn mower engine, hence the reason for the hooks. I am not going to test that, but sure seems like a logical answer.

I also get the sound. Noticed it about a week after owning. Was thinking that I would take it to the dealer. Sounds like stepping into a wet shoe...
Perfect discription. By the amount of the quick responses, sounds like another recall is looming.....
Maybe that is what the dealer's mech was trying to tell me, but not using the proper verbalage...
I had 3 Explorers over the years, never heard that sound, thats what was worring me! As a side note, wife finally got to ride the T4R and love it. Much smother ride according to her. Did not have the heart to tell her my Explorer had more aggressive tires and aftermarket stiffer shocks. (I was in Oregon at the time, lots of moutain hunting there). Now that I am in Florida, not much need for those upgrades. Just using it for utility hauling and towing a boat.....

toyota has just announced a massive production halt and an emergency recal on this break issue in the 2010 4runner

x2. Since day one back in '04. No worries.
x3 traded my 06 for a 10 and the 06 brakes same noise and feel 4yrs and never an issue.

My '03 Explorer did this but as I said earlier, it was much more quiet and not "squishy" sounding so it is hardly noticeable.

No offense but everyone needs to chill out over the recent recall issues. EVERY vehicle I have ever owned had a recall of some type. My '03 Explorer was recalled because the back window could fall out! My '96 Sable was recalled for transmission reprogramming and remember the running board light recall on Ford's recently - they could catch on fire and some houses were burnt down (wasn't there a cruise control issue recently with Ford as well?). The recent Corolla issues is probably nothing. According to the news last night, the Toyota Corolla is the highest selling vehicle in the WORLD and so far there are less than 100 complaints about steering.
Everyone is on a witch hunt with Toyota right now, so the slightest news of a possible recall makes the headlines. Meanwhile, Honda's recent recall as well as the Fusion Hybrid and Escape Hybrid recalls were barely mentioned on the news. Toyota has been making reliable cars for years, but no car company is without recalls.

Yep, it squishes — almost makes me think I need to bleed the brakes. It's good to know, however, that 2010 4Runners come with Toyota's new brake over-ride system. So if you are indeed facing a fiery death due to a stuck pedal, standing on the brakes will stop the truck. Tested it out last night by hitting 80km/h, then standing on gas and brakes at same time. Both times, engine overruled by brake, with engine grunting unhappily at about 2400 rpm.
Not to split hairs, but I do want you to know that I understood and appreciate your post. Your noise was more quiet and not squishy. I got it.
My point is, it really was not the same "noise" as I am hearing now, right? Hence, my reply, "thats what was worrying me"......
Your almost none noticable noise may be due to the same cause, and I thinnk based on the other responses, that is the most likley reason. But it was the first time I had heard that type of noise in any car/truck. Thus my initial concerns, now forgotten. Thanks again.
