Brand new 2020 screen scratched?

I've seen speculation in another topic (here have been a lot of topics) that the scratches aren't so much scratches but rather scuffs in a protective layer on the screen. I believe someone was able to rub that layer off. For me, the screen protector came with a little swab thing that did a good job of hiding things, at the very least. You'll probably notice an increase in responsiveness from the screen. I'm not the only one who has.

I got that same one but haven't put it on yet.

I'm a little afraid with how fragile the screen appears to be, if I put that on taking it off will cause real damage.

Has anyone put one of these on and taken it off?

I didn't know about this issue until last week when I saw the other thread. I ran out to look at mine and it had a few scratches, but nothing over the top.

I ordered the screen protector immediately and installed it when it came in. I can't much speak to increased responsiveness, but I definitely have more peace of mind

I just ordered one as well. I haven't noticed any scratches on mine but definitely would be nice having the peace of mind for sure.

What’s up with the new 8 inch screen material, why so soft?
My 2018 with the 6.1 inch screen, over 2.5 years - no screen protector and no scratches.

As it should be! I've never had a need on any other oem or aftermarket screen for a protector

I came across this thread on another forum and at least two people reported to have used some type of polish to remove their scratches (posts #93 and #94). Would be interesting to see if some type of polish can be used for periodic maintenance as opposed to using a protector.

Yeah, sorry but that's BS. You shouldn't need to do that kind of maintenance on an OEM unit especially for what they charge for it (either installed or needing a replacement). Toyota has always been really good about using proven reliable tech versus BMW/Mercedes/Other-luxury-brand-here bleeding edge technology. Why do you think its taken so long to get carplay/android auto? (besides the stupid as hell "entune" move/contract)

Regardless, that type of maintenance you are either removing material to remove scratches or simply filling them in.

So 11 years after the initial release of the 5th gen and they finally upgrade the screen to compete with competitors and efff it up? Come on Toyota... I guess they should have just left the old one, I doubt it would have affected sales.

I understand, I wasn't trying to be derogatory to you personally by any means and it is good to see that there have been some people finding solutions.

I wouldn't expect anyone to pay out of pocket for a new head-unit, that is just insane, also for a $4k head unit you should be able to take it into space without worrying about it

I've seen people doing aftermarket headunit replacements - T9, Alpine, Pioneer... everything on older models.

Now with 2020 having android auto+carplay (any other new features in 2020?) is there still "benefit" from aftermarket headunit, outside of maybe just a better QUALITY screen (durability+resolution!)

The thing I like most (a lot of others too) is that it is integrated into the bezel. Most aftermarket units are confined to the two-din space (which looks a bit strange without knobs or buttons on the side bezels), or have a terrible screen that looks like a tablet stuck to the dash begging to be stolen, or a similar to OEM questionable android based system.

I really wish someone would figure out how to jailbreak entune and just include carPlay+anroidAuto. Soooo many people would be happy.

I went out to check on my screen to see if there were any scratches and there were none that I could see. There was however finger prints so I used one of those lens cleaning wipes (the kind that come packaged for one time use) and used very little pressure. I could tell afterwards that there were some minor swirls in the screen which were caused by the wipe. Luckily they are so minor that once the screen protector goes on, you won’t be able to tell. Just hard to believe that the screen is so soft that something literally made for cleaning lenses and electronic screens caused some swirl marks.

Yeah, it *should* be made of Corning Gorilla Glass like iPhones and iPads. But it sure sounds like it’s not. Toyota probably went cheap with some kind of plastic screen material.

I'm curious what that's like in winter time with both vents actively blowing out hot air to back of screen

have you tried plastic polish and then wax over it with a micro-fiber towel?
You can also try Meguiar's Ultimate Polish?

Its gets out the super fine scratches normally out of dark paint. Its worth a shot..

I'm waiting for someone to video tape that before, during and after. Or I'll video it if I get 4k in donations to cover the cost.
Actually my dealer tried some kind of polish and it made it worse...not sure what they tried

If it is scratching this easy I wouldn't even mess with it. Return to dealer and hope for a TSB or buy screen protector.

I would bet money the "fix" from Toyota will eventually be a screen protector, at least for this model year. Sucks that fully bogus cheaping out on materials right there.

My dealer swapped from another rig on the lot. I didn't pay attention to the replacement as the morons scratched it during the install. Toyota would not honor it. Believe me I tried. For other reasons ended up with another 2020
