Break In and Air FIlter

Hey guy i'm Back! Ok so the new 2005 Sport 4Runner is great with the new leather and DVD's it's a head turner. Well I gave that one to the wife and went out and bought me a 05' Tacoma as well. I LOVE the truck, some minor complaints since I drove the 4runner as well but overall a very solid truck.

Ok can I ask what is break in for these engines? 100 Miles 500 or what?

Second I bought a K&N Filter kit for it and can I install this before break in.

Last what good aftermarket sites are there for the Tacoma? I have been to all the forums etc for the Taco but cannot find anthing out there except lift kits or running boards.

500 miles for break in is just fine. You can also drop in the K&N at anytime. I have one in my truck as well.

Hi Jake. So I have heard great things about the Amsoil product, but right now I need obviously a better air filter. One for my2005 Sport 4 Runner and one for my 05 Tacoma 4.0 V6. I had purchased the K&N from Performance products new. But tell me is the Amsoil that much better? I would like to know your thoughts. And I take it you are selling your K&N becasue you dropped in an Amsoil filter?

I haven't noticed a difference in either yet. It may be due to the fact I now run my A/C and it's allot hotter out. The hot air kills horsepower and the A/C kills gas mileage. In anycase I am sure the K&N makes a minimal difference in both of these areas, but it's not a supercharger, and not comparable to a hybrid car. If you have high expectations for the K&N you will be dissapointed. I do however reccomend it as an acceptable mod.

I could tell zero difference with the K&N Drop in. It sounds different, but I noticed no change with power or MPG...

On amsoil -- The vette came with mobil 1, a local shop
recommended Amsoil. Basically the same stuff but
Mobil 1 you can buy any place whereas Amsoil only
through dealers. If like me and live 30 miles from a
dealer, buy extra if not a convenient location for you.
I just went back to mobil 1. Use it in my trucks, car
and the Lexus will get it soon

Mobil1 and Amsoil are nothing alike, besides being a synthetic oil.. Very different additive packages. Mobil 1 is not a bad product, but from my research Amsoil is best...

mobil 1 is more than needed. Overkill I have heard
this from more than one tech. The avg person is
not going to offset the extra cost.

Know one's selling sys oil will agrue with what the tech's
say

The 4 runner won't get it since free oil changes came
with it from the dealer. Will change to say maybe the
lexus will get sys oil, if dealer has good prices keep putting the
OEM oil in there. Truck will probably keep using sys
since easy to change myself so cheap.

www.bobistheoilguy.com good site to discuss oil information. Guys on that site are into oil big time. They have a section dedicated to oil analysis and you can see how different oils have performed in members engines. Synthetic is good if changed at the proper interval, if you use UOA you can end up with longer OCI's and justify the additional cost of synthetic. You need to do used oil analysis to know what is the right interval for your engine and type of driving. If using synthetic you do go beyond Toyota's recommended OCI you may void your engine warranty if you end up with a problem and Toyota asks you to prove you changed your oil based on the Toyota recommended OCI. I can tell you that based on UOA on Toyota 4.7 V8's they will get good UOA on almost any oil. Use a name brand dino oil and OEM filter changed at the recommended interval and your 4.7 V8 will last longer then you want to own your truck. Amsoil makes a great dino oil and it has the API rating that Toyota requires.

I agree with AlexJet...is the new K&N a waste? I mean fter reading your site Boaz, it seems that the K&N filter is junk as it allows particles through?? SO do I continue to use the stock Filter and change out or simply is the K&N just marketing hype that might damage my engine?

As far as synthetic oils go, they are all overkill, especially when changed at OEM recommended intervals. With that said, Amsoil and Mobil 1 are usually rated at the top. Amsoil usually can be left in longer (extended change intervals). Being that the 4.7 is very soft on motor oil you can run either one for 10K miles or one year, which ever comes first. If you are uncomfortable with extended changes you would probably be better off with dino oil (cost savings).

The after market air filters (cotton/oil) allow the engine to breath better, but in some cases have shown less filtration. You will not feel any performance gains, just changes the sound/tone of the engine under full throttle. If you also install a free flowing exhaust the aftermarket air filter can enhance the power gains. You may even see a small increase in mpg. It has been my experience K&N filters may not seal as good as other brands. I use the TRD drop-in, which is very well made and seals just like OEM. There is no modification to the air box and the filter is made by Toyota, so you will not have any warrantee problems. The best part of an after market cotton filter is it lasts for the life of the car. You can just tap the debris from it and replace it. After it gets really dirty you can wash it and re-oil it and the filter is good as new. Just be careful to follow the cleaning instructions and don't over oil it.

To confirm how well a filter change is working you can have a sample of your oil analyzed. You would need a base line first by analyzing the oil using the OEM filter.

I recommend using a good synthetic oil and oil filter (Amsoil or Mobil 1, 0w-30), with a cotton air filter (TRD, K&N, etc.). At 5K miles have the oil analyzed to see how well the oil is holding up and to see how much longer you can run it before changing. After you have verified the change interval you should get 10K+ miles, safely, out of a change.

I would never use anything but the OEM filter and I would never let anyone install the airfilter for me. If they don't get it sealed correctly you can do more damage to your engine then you can not changing the oil.

The TRD air filter is the same type (oil/cotton) as the K&N, which should be re-oiled as little as possible. Try to tap or lightly blow the debris out of the filter at 5K miles.

I have not made my judgement on the K&N filter. After my UOA comes back, I will post up results. IF it lets in more dirt into my engine, I wiont use it. I have not noticed a difference with the K&N installed. However, I might put in the OEM filter to see if I notice a difference going back to stock... who knows...

If I end up switching back, I will sell you the K&N !
