Bright Courtesy Door Lights

Just wanted to a share a quick lighting project I did this weekend.

Picture above, on the left is the LED I'm replacing, purchased from V-LEDS over a year ago for $10 a pair. While these are brighter than the stock bulb notice the configuration of the LED's, the ones on the sides are pretty much a waste, since the light housing in the doors don't have a reflector in them.

The new flat type multi-LED config on the right should direct all light through the lens cover, no light is wasted. Purchased from SuperBrightLEDs 6 High Power LED Disc Type Wedge Base Bulb Specifications

To access the door light just use a flathead screwdriver and pry the whole thing out. The lens cover snaps right off. Unhook the connector.

The new bulb is a bit too tight. I used a dremel to shave a mm off each side.

Not pretty but it'll work!

Put everything back together and wait for night time.

The dome lights are off in these pics. Notice the amount of light on the ground. Also the entire door compartment is lit up, while the old LED would only light up about a third of that, and the stock bulbs were pretty much useless.


Next lighting mod... reverse fog lights....... in the rear bumper!

I have the "old" LED that you had in the door right now, I can definitely see the difference in brightness. I really like the increased lighting and think it's important; I am also strongly considering JA's footwell lighting mod.

for all that work, i would buy those led panels, something like 8 smd 5050 led, 2rows of 4 together and u dont need to shave anything, just figure how to stick it. look for some led panels and cut some paper off the measurements, its gona help u figure out how big of a panel u can fit. i did 24 on all dome and map lights and its bright, but also if u leave it long enough itll get hot.

Have you seen something like this?
I thought of this too but the smallest panel I've found was on oznium which was 1" X 1" 9 LED and the housing would still need be shaved. They also don't have 5050 LEDs on them, they have the smaller type.

It really wasn't that much work, a good dremel and a proper sanding bit it was literally a few seconds on each side.

Well sure there's tons on there but haven't seen any that would appear to be the correct size and as bright or brighter than the one I went with. There is also the issue of quality with these random ebay sellers.
I was more interested to know if you've seen something in particular, since you made the suggestion. The housing for the door light is limited in space, it's not anywhere as much as a dome light housing.

Wow, those are insanely bright. I did all mine with cool white LED's and it's more than enough light for me, but I like what you did

Its the same. They all made in china. Also the more leds the brighter they are, so its going to be brighter than what u have.
