I am finally working on 3rd gens again. Got the wife's sienna done. Anyways my Tetanus1 is in need frame patches. I thought I lost the back shock plate due to rot. But I didn't. I just outboarded the shocks anyhow.

As Tetanus1 is the expermental rig. First one I ever welded back in 2015 [215k] , and I Sucked. Being it's close 300k. I am showing what happens when you just plate and do nothing.

I never did find what snapped off the passenger shock as it was not seized nor anything flexing... :/

This is Tetanus1, so it's getting some basic plating simply because it's about done. I need to add a photo of the outer plate once it's fully welded back on.

My theory of cleaning inside out is paying off. Very little rust, etc, inside if you clean them out and seal out the frame holes. So painting and coating with rust inhibitors will really slow down the trusting inside boxed frames.

This is what happens when you don't paint and seal off your frame patches properly. 7 to 9 years later, your patches are junk.

When you put safety T on and don't clean out the box and put rust inhibitors on the steel. You have to fix it again.

Granted, this was done in 2015 when I threw this one together. I had to cut the plate off and redo it.

So it's worth taking the extra time and cleaning the steal sealing it with rust inhibitors to super slow down the rusting.

Well, replacing patches. I pulled the tank out. It was removed in 2017. Luckily, it came right out. :)

So now I am going to plate the inside of the frame to strengthen the lower control arm bracket.

Rust inhibitor converter helps, but plating will get its strength back.

Yes. My 1998 was the control. I started plating in 2015. You can see why you don't just plate over with plates with removing rotted steel. Just like the safety t caps. You need super clean and treat the steel to stop the rot

Here is why you really should clean all rot and cancer out. I cut the plate off. That was solid in 2015. Nothing left rotted

I fixed this rotted away bracket too. Yes one side is rebuild with only weld . The other side has a small plate then welded

I coated my gas tank with rust inhibitors and then a quick coat of gloss black..might as well ad the tank is out

I started reading through your thread..

Oh my good GOD!! I know they call the North East the rust belt but your pictures are beyond rust!! There is virtually nothing left! The fact you can weld to any of this is crazy! This Fall when I did my control arm bushings, I spotted a few "brown" spots starting to show through and started to worry a bit...

I think I share a few things: a love for Toyotas, I started as an Electronics Engineering Technologist, but now spend 90% of my time on the computer...

My Wife bought me a welder in 2022 and I'm getting better at it with every project...

However, your mechanical experience goes miles beyond mine! I seem to spend more time fixing and working on all my sons' (3 and recently added a daughter-in-law) vehicles, rather than my own collection--- 1998 4Runner, 1994 Celica GTS, 2002 Celica GT. My middle son and I spent several years restoring his procession of cars--- 2 Mitsubishi Eclipses, Civic SI, Mazda Miata and recently a Subaru Impreza... However, I just pulled the 5sFe out of my 94 Celica--- I must admit, I'm enjoying wrenching more as I get closer to retirement!

You guys keep saying nothing is left, but you're still running the original rear lower control arm mounts!

I've used POR15 for years and find its about as good a preventative measure as I've found. I know lots of people in your neck of the woods use fluid film by the gallon. I've used rust converters and rust paints but nothing lasts as long as POR15 on bare metal. My conclusion, is its always just a matter of time! I have a couple of rust holes in my Celica, so I plan on cutting the rust out, with the progress I'm making in my welding, replacing what I can. I'll be using lots of POR15. When it comes to 4runners, there lots of posts of people doing frame swaps-- most in the NE! Even where I live in BC Canada, where salt isn't used, there's still always a couple of new frames out behind the Toyota dealership where Taco warranty frame swaps are still happening(maybe a few Tundras). You'd think Toyota would have done something to eleviate this.
I appreciate your quick response. I'll keep apprised of your progress, and if you don't mind I may ask some advise in the future...

Not at all you can ask all the questions you wish. Por 15 is really just a hard paint. I used it in the past and in my area (one of the worst freeze thaw ratio in the US) it doesn't work as well. I also used KBS seal with similar results. They make a paint called Steel it that supposedly works very well. However, you are correct these products and rust inhibiting solutions really just slow down the rot. Nothing will stop it completely and in time.

I use Fluid Film and my experiment with cosmoline as well. Fluid film great inside things.. Just washes off. Paint is really just an indicator of what the steel is doing. So i just use basic paint. So I don't get too excited about that.. Then I cover over the paint with rust prevention solutions and just keep an eye on things.. :-)
