Broke a cv axle this weekend.

So, I was out wheeling this weekend, nothing heavy. Im running open diffs front and rear. I was going up a hill and lost traction so I pressed the brake and gave it a lil gas to try and lock the right front wheel a bit to give tractin to the left tire. (maybe a dumb move on my part) Well after not much throttle at all I hear POP! Broke the axle on the right side. Not the joint but actually twisted the axle shaft in half. Does this sound normal? I figured if it was gonna fail it would have been at the joint and under alot more stress than that. Im thinking maybe the axle had already been damaged or a defect?

Any insight is appreciated.

I'm going to guess that it was not a Toyota OE axle but a cheap auto parts store, junk steel, poorly heat treated one.

You are lucky it broke there and not inside the front diff.
 
Thats what I was thinking. Unfortunately, thats all I could afford to replace it with right now also. Im not sure what was in it as I bought it used .
 
Look up a coupon for napa, you can grab a pretty good quality replacement for around $60. I keep a spare all the time too. Love that lifetime warranty after my 3rd break this weekend. Hopefully I can get a replacement for my spare before this comings trip to Rausch Creek.
 
From what I hear, the NAPA axles might the best of the non-OE axles.

Other than the inconvenience of swapping axles on the trail (which we can do in less than 30min), the fear of breaking the splined end off inside the front diff/intermediate shaft, the cheap/lifetime warrantied axles would be a deal.

Breaking that stub off in the diff really is a pain. We extracted one in a parking lot is about 3 hours. IF I had to do it again, I could probably do it in about half the time. It still stinks to do.

A work of advice buy a rebuilt OE at a CV/axle re-builder shop. Worth the extra money. You should be able to get a rebuild for ~$120 w/core.

Well, that makes me feel a little better, The one I bought was from NAPA and was a reman axle. Does anyone know how that works, what are the chances that I got a rebuilt Toyota axle and not a rebuilt aftermarket axle? The core that I turned in was obviously an aftermarket?

Chances are, unfortunately, greater.. because they break more. IMHO I'd spend the extra $20 for the NAPA brand and a lifetime warranty..

@Gerdo.. I'm loving them. Just the right feel, way better than the 906's. the wife has renamed my truck to Alotta.

Alotta Lift. I couldn't help but laugh when she said it, we were just pulling out of our favorite hiking spot (~2 miles down some very bumpy dirt that leads back to a Wildflower Preserve) with the dogs.. Which is the ONLY place she'll go in my 4R. Yeah, that type of girl.

NAPA AUTO PARTS

Im scared of breaking off inside the diff if I use a non OE replacement, id probably end up breaking something else trying to get it out.

I get all my CV's from a buddy that scraps Toyotas, but before that I got them at junkyards or craigslist. $25-$40 is what I always paid. No warranty but I dont seem to break as many CV's as people running aftermarket
