Broke my 4x4

I got stuck today and heard a loud steering sound like a cv breaking. 4x4 no longer works but i don't hear anything rattling or anything. Took a look at the cv's and they look fine not sure what happend and I am confused. Is there some sort of case over top of the cv that keeps it from hanging down when it breaks?. The car doesent make any bad noises in 4x4 or in 2x4 even went up to 80km/h. Anything helps thanks

You can break them and have them spin inside the boot.
 
Tell your 4Runner to cough while feeling the CV boot to see if you feel anything moving around inside of it.

My son just did this in his rig and we only found out because he has a front locker and the wheel was not moving. CV looked complete.
 
Both cv's are fine could it be the transfer case? Or the Diff? It doesent make any bad noises at all

Rotated it in 2x4 and the front wheels did not spin tried to turn it in 4x4 and it won't move now. Next step I'll get my buddy to turn one wheel and I will turn the other in 2x4 and see if the drive shaft spins. If not it's most likely the front diff I guess?

The front drive shaft will spin in 2wd. Make sure the vacuum lines to the A.D.D system are in good condition.

Can you explain that a bit more? If the front driveshaft is rotating, isn't that the very definition of 4WD? Maybe I'm missing something, I'm happy to learn something new.

[MENTION=209707]01_4_runner[/MENTION], can you be a bit more specific about what is happening? You have the multi-mode transfer case in the '01 (I think), so are you in AWD mode (transfer case in differential mode) or 4WD mode (transfer case locked)?

Again, I'd start by seeing what the front driveshaft does - put a chalk (or tape) mark on it, drive it a few feet in 4WD mode, and see if the mark rotated. If it didn't, then your front driveshaft is not being driven, so the problem is in the transfer case. If it does rotate, then the problem is downstream (diff or axles/CV joints).

I believe he was talking about spinning the the drive shaft by hand.

If all tires are on the ground and the vehicle is in 2wd, you should be able to spin the front drive shaft by hand if you have the A.D.D system.

Once you put it in 4wd you won't be able to spin the drive shaft by hand.

Not 100% sure what an ADD system is. The transfer case is not the problem when I shift the car in 4x4 i can no longer spin the drive shaft by hand. Keep in mind my car is on stands. When I spin both wheels forward at the same time the front drive shaft does not spin pretty sure it is the front diff but it sounded alot like a cv axle and I would think that the diff would make a bad noise when driving. Anything helps guys and I will be working on it again after work. How would I test if it is the front diff that broke?
