Broken window switch on driver door

Hello All,

I've had my new 14 4Runner about a month now. I guess I haven't tried to roll down the passenger side window until just recently. The front passenger window button on the driver's door does not work. The window rolls down just fine if you use the switch on the actual passenger door. The window lock button is not on. All other windows work fine from the driver door control. So it's got to be this particular switch.

All the searches I've run on here mainly come up with rear hatch window problems. I don't see anything like what I'm experiencing.

Should I take the driver door panel off and see if something isn't plugged in correctly for this one switch? Any ideas what to look for? I'm guessing this switch never worked as I bought the 4Runner one day after it arrived at the dealer from the distribution center. I'm trying to not have to take it back to the dealer to get fixed if it's something simple I can do myself.

If it's not a deal breaker I would just make a note with the date discovered and have them look at it during your 5,000 service. I'm not most people but I am leery of pulling plastic interior panels without knowing where all the fasteners are. I've seen and had too many break and never completely seat up again.
 
The wiring connection has one harness that connects all of those switches, so it is not as simple as one harness unplugged. I'd let Toyota dealer fix it.
 
Yeah, I think you are all right. I would definitely be afraid of breaking the door panel or something worse. I don't even like to do my own audio upgrades as I'm afraid it won't be perfect like a pro installer would do. And this isn't a big deal so I'm in no hurry to rush it in to the dealer.

Use your warranty - while you have it. You paid for it and this is what it is there for. Also, it's better to have something like this documented should it come back in the future.

Hey guys,

I didn't want to make another thread, but I'm having the same issue as above. Has anyone else encountered this since the original post date (6/17ish)? Planning on making a trip to the Toyota dealership soon, but if anyone had a quick fix, I'm all ears. Thanks!

I would not mess with it. You should be under warranty. Let the dealer fix it. You dont want to mess it up and have them tell you your repair attempt voided the warranty.

If its under the bumper to bumper, let Toyota fix it. It is a single module with 1 connector. Replacement part is about $300. The auto down on my window doesn't work any more, but I'll live with it and keep 3 bills.

So I just wanted to report back since going to the dealership. Turns out there was a really simple fix for this and I was in and out of the dealership in 5 minutes. When I bought the T4R, I guess the windows were never initialized (or the battery was unplugged at some point), all the service technician had to do was go around to each window and hold it down for ten seconds then bring it all the way up to re-initialize them. After that, I was able to control all windows from the driver controls. Pretty weird that you have to do this every time you unplug the battery, but oh well...

So thats it. Apparently this solves Auto-Up/Down window problems as well. Just thought I'd share.

Interesting. I still haven't been to the dealership to get this fixed since I started this thread. I'm going to walk outside now and try it.

Worked perfectly! Thanks for posting ucfknight! Saved me a trip to the dealership. Now I'm glad I posted this a few months ago.

Beat me to it, I have a lot of Sales guys bringing vehicles down and going:

Sales- "I don't get why the windows are working... "

Me- "Did you jump start the vehicle?"

Which is usually followed by:

Sales- "Yeah, battery was dead (happens a bit when they sit on the lot a while, no big deal)

Me- "Did you reinitialize the windows?"

*Vacant stare devoid of any semblance of sentience, followed by crickets chirping*

Me- "Roll each window up and down 3 times..."

*two minutes later*

Sales- "Awesome thanks dude!"

After I used a jumper on the unused plug on my front passenger door which enabled the driver's door control to operate the passenger window, I came across this fix in this thread (both driver's and passenger window switches not working for front passenger window. All others work). I haven't tried it yet but I have a question about the passenger window switch.

I pulled the passenger window switch and took it apart. There is no continuity showing between the resistor, the LED, and a diode. I tested each individually from one wire lead to the other side lead. This does not seem right. Am I doing something incorrectly in testing for continuity? I have a DMM set to beep on continuity.

Bringing a thread back from the dead...I just completed the “hold down the button for 10 seconds and then put the window all the way back up” fox and the drivers come Trail
Panel is back in action!! Thanks so much!!
 
I’m having this issue with my left rear passenger window- the driver door switch stopped working but it was fine using that doors’ switch. Then I found this thread and lowered the window and held it for ten seconds. Then I went to raise the window and it went 80% of the way up and then froze. Now none of the switches work to move just that one window.

Any suggestions before I head to Toyota?



UPDATE
Ok so I stopped by Home Depot and grabbed some contact cleaner and blasted the heck out of the drivers door switches and the door switch and after a few times of not going fully up and down it now works perfectly!

Worth a shot for anyone else who may have this kind of issue

I also sprayed some into the volume knob on my stereo which was working sporadically, so I’ve just been using the steering wheel volume controls for a long time. Fixed that problem as well!!!
