Been a long time lurker here and this is my first post. I unwittingly did the BST campaign when I went to dealership to get my key reprogrammed. Anyway long story short the guys asked me if I wanted the ECU reflashed per a recall. So I said sure, it is only a reflash right. He said yes and it was just for a software update, nothing to worry about. He never mentioned it was the BST campaign, just said it would take about 20 minutes, and I was so wrapped up in trying to get a bunch of stuff done I said sure.
Well when I got it back and picked up the paperwork I realized it was the BST campaign and that I am an idiot for not double checking. Yep i'm that guy.
Any this brings me to the reason for the post. I drove home no problem after the reflash and the next day I noticed my idle was dropping to about 100 rpms and eventually my truck started to die on me at stop lights, stop signs, the 405 freeway, anywhere it was bumper to bumper traffic or I came to a stop.
I called the dealershit and they said they had never heard of such a thing... I found that hard to believe. Anyway I did a little research before going back found that after the BST campaign the computer thinks the engine is close to new, and adjust for a new clean engine. Well i have 182K on my truck and that is clearly not the case with my truck.
I realized the ECU was having trouble with a dirty throttle body, so I took it off, cleaned it and put it back on. Then did a seafoam treatment 1/3 vacuum hose, 1/3 gas tank and fired it back up. I got tons of white smoke, about the engine ran at 1100 rpms for 5 minutes and then it settle back down nicely. The shuttering and dying went away immediately.
I filled up my tank and the computer now says I can go 362 miles per tank while it used to say 270-280 after fill up. I know this is not accurate but will report back after the first tank to see what really happens.
The throttle response is now great again, and feels like it did before i took it in and got the stupid campaign. I hope this helps anyone that gets stuck in the same scenario. I did get my check engine light, VSC, and a couple more lights to come on after the seafoam, but did a negative cable pull for a few minutes and everything is back to normal.
Anyway this seemed to fix my problems and hope you can learn from my mistakes.
