Bud Built Hidden Winch Regrets?

I've been thinking more and more about the Bud Built hidden winch mount for the 5th Gen. Several recent trips to remote areas has convinced me that a winch would be really nice to have - I'm getting to old to do a whole lot of pulling on a come-along... I was thinking of installing a Warn M8000 - performance specs show this winch to have equal or better pulling capabilities at 4 layers of wrap than many competitive winches that carry a higher rating.

I have seen where several members have installed this set-up, don't recall reading any long term reviews. Are you still happy with your Bud Built Hidden Winch? Would you do it again? Any opinions or suggestions on winch choice? Anything I "need to know" before I go this route?

I have used mine a lot. Only regret is not getting it sooner.

Install is a bit of a PITA because it is a tight fit.
You will probably want to relocate the controls to inside the engine bay, so plan ahead for that with 2ga cable and loom.
The wireless remote is very handy, but make sure you get the new version. I have the old version, and I had to put it on a switch because it draws a good bit of current.

Where did you put your controls? Have pics?

Wireless Remote? I'm lost, I wasn't aware that was an option on the m8000.

you should be able to get a wireless controller for any winch.

they take a bit to get used to, as there is a bit of lag.


I feel like im spamming this, but take a look at the rugged ridge 8500. its half the price of the warn and has better ratings.
I have one, and several people I wheel with also, and they are great. with such quality winches out there, theres no reason to pay WARN prices.
 
I used the winch quite a bit last summer, pulling rocks out of the road. I am really happy with the mount, no regrets at all, it held up well with some funky angles and very large boulders. It is a great solution and I like the lowpro look. My Warn fit in without relocating controls, not that that is a possibility with the 9.5 cti that I have. The wireless remote is definitely a good idea, I am not sure which version I have but I did not detect any problematic current draws.

Winch choice and ratings have been covered elsewhere on the forum, I would stick with Warn for sure.
 
Sorry, no pics, but it is right behind the headlight on the passenger side, where some people put a second battery. For the extended wires, I just picked up some 2ga wire, cut to length, and solder terminals.

I couldn't find a spec sheet on that winch, that isn't one I've looked at before. Part of my reason with going Warn is that I'm thinking that if I need the winch, I'm probably in a bad spot - I don't want to chance the winch not working when I need it. If I routinely wheeled with a lot of other people and knew I was going to have back-up I would be willing to try something else. It occurred to me on the road to Chorro Vista this past December that I was 30miles from the Nearest Ranger station on a road that you could barely drive 3mph on - an extra few hundred dollars for the Warn just gives me more peace of mind.

Yep! That was me! :happens: I should have either extended the rubber hosing on either end after I bent it back, or bent the pip itself a little to relieve the stress on the rubber hosing. It's very apparent when installing where the stress in the hose is.

Preference! You'll get some more power winching if you have a dual battery setup and link the two when actually pulling. But one should be fine as long as it's installed correctly.

I would recommend dual batteries, or a bigger single battery, like Group 31 Die Hard Platinum. With stock battery, there would be a very large voltage drop when running the winch. With the 31M it is just a small dip, and it has the reserve capacity to use the winch without the engine running.
 
The BB plate is a good piece of kit. I have now upgraded to a full Shrockworks bumper, but the BB plate was good-to-go.

It is nice that the BB plate does not mount out front and stick out hurting approach angle or exposing the winch to more elements.

Negatives are the zero instructions that come with it. By now you can see examples of what winches will fit on the plate. My original superwinch did not fit. The Warn 8000 with wireless remote is a good option, and known to fit.

Also, I ran the BB plate with the plastic radiator beauty cover removed so I could have access. With the shrockworks I have the plastic cover installed because I now have access from the bottom.

This worries me a bit.....I just ordered a BB mount for a Superwinch LP8500. But, it looks like that model has a similar profile to the Warn, so fingers- crossed and I'll keep everyone updated.
 
I'm running the BB hidden winch mount with a Warn VR 8000. So far I've been really happy with everything. I have only had this stuff installed for a few months now but used it a decent amount. I've pulled myself out of a few spots where the angles were really less than ideal and it worked like a champ. I've also pulled out several vehicles stuck in the snow and it worked flawless every time. I agree with some of the other posts, look at the pics of other installs because mine didn't even come with instructions. I had to extend the 2 gauge wire to relocate the box under my hood. I put mine in the empty spot behind the passenger side head light. Had to make a bracket for that to make it fit. I would recommend figuring out mount location and building your mount ahead of time if needed so you don't have to figure out those details during the actual install. Good luck and you will definitely not regret this mod!! (Mick1 has awesome/super helpful pics that I used quite a bit)
