I think you have to understand limitations...it's not claiming to be a full on bumper.....that's why it's 300 some dollars.

It's secured with a lot more then just "u-bolts". It's sandwiched between the frame and aluminum bumper and secured to both the bumper and frame. It's not going anywhere.

Yep. I've pulled my 4R from a variety of angles with my Bud hidden plate. I've even pulled a friends Landover out of a couple tight spots without a problem.
What's gonna be a factor is the operator knowing the limits of equipment and load. Not the other way around.

Almost positive I saw someone here try it on their 2014, they posted pictures and had to cut up and reweld the fairlead mounting area a bit, but it seemed like it fit for the most part...sorry I can't seem to find the thread right now, but search around a bit and I'm sure you'll find it.

Sorry to bring this to the top, but how do you reach the clutch to allow the winch to freespool? This is the only thing keeping me from buying mine-it seems like it would be a major pain. anyone?

I emailed undercoverhwms back in August before the Southern Speed winch bumper came out. Really wanted a BudBuilt (alas still nothing it seems) and these guys seemed pretty similar. Just wanted a simple winch mount w/o a lot of modification to the front end.
Not sure what their deal with price/winch is now but when I emailed them I was told the mount/winch was a package deal. No description on winch, no discount if I preferred to supply my own. Wasn't even made clear if the winches were in stock as they said they had supply problems. Not bashing them, more competition the better and they have a nice lookin' product, but pretty vague email I'll be happy to PM.
Surprised BudBuilt hasn't come out with one for the 14' and up yet...FWIW I love my Southern Speed "mini" bumper.

I just power the line out, but I have got a high speed winch so it goes pretty quick. Never had a problem operating that way.

I was going to trim a little bit of the shroud where the hood latch is. Unless you have popeye arms cutting it back 3 or so inches on the clutch side should give you plenty of room to reach in and use the clutch.

i believe [MENTION=114376]Mooney[/MENTION] has the new Warn Zeon Platinum with electronic, wireless remote-controlled clutch. maybe he'll chime in on how that's working out as an option—albeit a spendy one—for guys going for the über-minimalist winch mount.

For me - I just pop the top plastic shroud off when I'm on the trail. It's only a few clips. Stick em in a plastic bag and put the plastic cover in the back. I ordered a couple sizes of deck plate from Amazon - should be here in a day or two. I would not spool the winch out very far. I do it all the time on my trail rig with an 8274 - but the brake is totally different. On the compact models the brake is always engaged. For 20 feet maybe it's ok. For a long pull, you may cause problems. Spooling out is usually done against the brake, meaning it's building up a lot of heat on the spool drum - which also is the brake drum. With synthetic rope you can end up melting the rope on the internal coils while spooling out. Winches designed for synthetic rope will move the brake outside the spool area of the drum to the inside of the planetary gear area - but then you're also adding a lot of heat to that part of the winch.
For that reason if you're going to pull 80 feet out, I would use the clutch.
Also for the 2014/15 models - I built my own hidden winch mount. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/189373-2015-tep-hidden-winch-build-install.html It's a lot like the HWMS. I spent a lot of time sorting out how to re-mount all the lower plastic cover brackets. I'm guessing this is one of the key issues with the 14/15 model years. It will require drilling out the rivets on the aluminum bumper to remove the tabs and then cutting some of them and re-attaching to the new winch plate. Locating them is tricky. IMO - to do it right, all the original parts need to go back how they were including the under-bumper plastics.

Works great, love the remote .. . saved me from having to cut a clutch access point. Haven't found any negatives with the exception of the dent in the wallet.
