*Build Thread* Jimmy's '99 Base 4runner

Welcome to my 1999 4runner build thread.

*I was so excited about the muffler when I was getting it installed that I completely forgot to ask him which one it is... All I know is that it's flowmaster and I payed about $200. I'm going to call them tomorrow morning and ask, so I'll edit it tomorrow.*

This truck was purchased by my dad back in 1998. He has owned it ever since and kept it well maintained. It has 187,000 miles, all freeway miles though. He just bought a new car (Mercedes C250) and gave me the 4runner. The check engine light is lit up but I've taken it in to two different mechanics and they both checked everything and said it's fine. I am going to keep this truck throughout my years in college, then probably hand it down to one of my younger siblings.

Specifications:
  • 3RZ Engine
  • 2.7L 4 Cylinder Engine
  • Automatic Transmission
  • 150 Horsepower
  • 2 Wheel Drive

Modifications:
  • Spoiler
  • Clear white turn signals
  • JVC Stereo
  • Flowmaster Muffler
  • Plasti Dip Spray painted grille, rims, and gas lid, black.
  • Blacked out tail lights - Night Shades spray paint

Future Modifications:
  • 4300k HID lights or 8000K HID lights with retrofit
  • Fog lights
  • Plasti Dip Spray painting all emblems in the back, black
  • New off roading tires

Here's a picture of the 4runner when I first got it-

Here are some pictures showing the 4runner as it stands 11/23/12-

I will most likely be doing my HID's on Monday and will post more pictures when I am done.

Thanks!

Nice start, but isn't yours a 2wd? It says 4wd in your build. What Flowmaster did you get?

Not sure, I read online that it said 4wd but I'm not positive. It's the base 4cyl model, is that 2wd? Also if you read above I said I don't know I forgot to ask the guy but I'm going to call him tomorrow morning and ask for the exact model of it.

I just read like three different websites that list all of the 4cyl's as 4wd.. there's a 2wd limited but mines just the base.

You've got a 2wd. In the photo below, see how you only have one shifter? That's the shifter for your auto transmission... If your 4Runner was 4wd, you'd have another shorter shifter to the left of it to control the transfer case.

You ought to check out this thread:

Along w/the other stickies @ the top of the 3rd gen forum. You'll learn alot, and it will help you get to know your new 4Runner.

Uh not to sound like a total dbag but if you don't know how to tell if your truck is 4wd then you should stick to a bicycle... and yours is 100% 2wd I'd bet my bicycle it is haha

Edit: big fish beat me too it.

Yeah, but I said it in a nice way. Give the guy a break, man. Who knows, it could be his first vehicle?

Either way, he's obviously excited about it, and all of us have to start somewhere.

Welcome to the forum, enjoy the build. The whites a nice choice in color.

PS: Most of the people on the forum have the brains not to post such comments in other peoples build threads.

Don't get your panties in a bunch, I've had the truck for a week now. Yeah, it is my first car too. I read some misleading information on some websites in which the content was ambiguous.

Your 4Runner is 2WD. I'm 100% sure.

ChildrenofBodom had a 4cylinder 2WD base that he converted to 4WD.

Alright thanks for the confirmation

Thank you man, appreciate it.

That's a great first car! And if you stick around, it won't be the last time some of us give you a little sh*t. Part of the game. :hatsoff:
