So recently some d0uc#3b@g decided to steal my roof bars with my custom sticker-bombed fairing :frusty: Ironically, I believe I saw it installed on another 3rd gen. Couldn't do anything since the guy was on the opposite lane and I couldn't react fast enough on the tight road. Luckily, I found [MENTION=92510]Ol'Blue[/MENTION] 's 2000 Limited part-out and he gave me a great price on a factory roof rack. Everything including end caps and the actual rails were all in great shape. Just needed a nice coat of paint. So my project for today was to paint and install the new-to-me rack.
Here's a before shot of the rack.
Decided to use our clothe-line in our backyard as a hanging rack to paint all the parts. If you notice, I did take all the bars apart and just painted the metal parts. Used a couple of high-heat gloss and matte paint cans which I had laying around from previous projects.
Also, for the plastic cross-bar legs, I decided to give those a nice coat of black Plastidip with a couple of layers of Glossifier. Looks great and has a similar texture as a factory FJ Cruiser roof rack.
Here's the rack which I decided was easier to re-assemble on a table before final install.
Lastly, here's the rack fully installed on my 4Runner. Definitely was worth the extra effort to take everything apart and spend the extra hour or two prepping. Unfortunately from this shot, you can see the extent of the cancer that has spread all over my roof :cry2:
Getting that taken care off during the summer while I head to PA for an internship. Going to miss my 4Runner during those two months (and obviously my family
). Plan on also getting the timing belt/water pump done while I'm out and I might stock on parts for a Tundra brake upgrade. I was quoted almost the exact same price on Tundra vs 4Runner parts. Going this route because I definitely need new rotors and pads and if I include the core charge, I can get new calipers for an extra $60.
