Building Red October

Well, since I'm breaking in a new engine, may as well do it right! Went camping with Red and the Wifey near Echo Lake in the Uintah's.

Took Red out again, did a little fishing at some remote-ish lakes with my bro in law. Got rained on pretty good a couple of times, and just generally tried to find the middle of nowhere...

Well its about time I got around to reading your build thread. Really excellent work man! You have great taste and pretty envious fabrication skills.

While I definitely understand your fury about the chinese motor, I've read quite a bit about the quality of chinese manufacturing recently. Apparently they are building clones of just about everything that rivals the quality of the original manufacturer. Thought that was pretty interesting.

Anyways, looking forward to what you build in the future. This thread has a ton of great info.

Life can be pretty strange sometimes, and a little ironic. Let's all remember how upset my wife was about the new motor shenanigans and how she wanted to burn Red to the ground, everybody remember? Well she also wanted me to get into a newer more reliable ride, she liked 2nd gen tacos. Last December that POS Chebby she drove took a dive too, ended up needing like $3500-4000 to fix multiple problems at once. Long story short I said that wasn't gonna happen, so i traded that pile as fast as I could.

We bought what she wanted, a 2011 Taco Access cab, 4.0, 6MT, in Super White, complete with douche bag 6" drop bracket lift kit and big shiny wheels, she loved it, I hated it. But the truck was a great deal, well cared for, and low mile machine. So after the dust settles on that purchase, she realizes that she drives around ten times as many miles every week as I do ( ...really I drive about 35 miles a week, she drives around 400...). Keeping gas in her big shiny truck was expensive at around 12 mpg, you gotta pay to play sista! And she doesn't wanna rack up the miles up on the new machine. So she traded me into the new truck and she drives Red, cuz it already has tons of miles on it, and in reality it is way more cooler than the DB Tacoma. So after a few minor changes in order to make it more highway friendly, like stepping back to some 265 Falkens, and removing the recovery equipment, etc, she took over my baby. So, and this is all very ironic, now wifey daily drives Red, and loves it I might add.

I on the other hand have been relegated to the Tacoma, and even tho it is a really nice truck, I feel like I need to add flat billed hats, white Oakleys and an e-cig to my daily regimen.

All is not lost however. I have been able to do some pretty cool things on some other projects since the wife stole what I loved. My trailer is finally ready to camp! And Red does a great job towing it, which I was a little worried about to be honest.

1st time i checked out your thread, sucks about the motor woes but sounds like it is squared away. Unbro the Taco and post a pic. sounds like the missus needs a prius

How did your truck ride with 881s on the second perch? I'm running 881s on the first perch and 890s out back, but will have to go up a notch up front to account for the ~100 lb bumper that's going on the truck in a month or so. I'm also hoping it brings it down enough in the front so it doesn't have any negative rake. It looked like your truck had considerable reverse rake with the 890s and 881s on the second perch.

Where's this at exactly? I'm planning a multi-day trip up that way later this summer and looking for some good spots.

Trust me I'm workin on getting the taco to a more usable and less bro-like place, slow progress tho. But its gonna happen. Its just that i have to replace basically every single suspension part, and replace a chunk of frame that is cut out during the DB install. And since I bought the truck the way it sit i don't have the stock pieces. All the better reason to upgrade if you ask me...

As far as the prius goes,:barf: I still have a hold of my man card thanks. Really tho, I'm of the persuasion that if it doesn't have a real frame and 4wheel drive parts its not worthy...

Lol, patience. I'm trying to have some patience of my own.

I love the build progress. How is the replacement motor holding up?

China Motor is pretty good, its got a rear main leak tho. I guess its more of a weep than a leak, just gotta keep an eye on it, since I am not currently in the frame of mind to tear it down enough to fix it, haha.

You've been to hell and back with that thing.
Now you GOTTTTAAAA keep it forever!

I do love this truck, and we've "bonded" to say the least.

Sweet build! Looks dope in the snow!:bolt:

Thanks man!

Red rides great. Ive been running that front setup for about 40K miles now, its doing great. Its very slightly softer with the tube bumper vs. stock. And I run swaybar-less so it does lean a fair amount (been thinking about going back to a swaybar with wifey driving it daily). Overall tho the ride is stiff enough for my likes, but it soaks up the bumps and is pretty comfortable. I was happy with the rake until I added a rear bumper to the mix, then I stepped up to Toytec Superflex, now I'm very satisfied with this setup.

I was thinking about you the other day. Glad the China motor is working out.

China motor is doing better than expected to be honest. I'm hoping for a fair amount of mileage from it. Just gotta keep an eye on things like the leak I mentioned above, but I lack the motivation to go to the trouble of fixing it at this point.

Echo Lake is one of several small lakes south of Murdock Mtn. Its east of Kamas a few miles. Basically take center street east out of Kamas, it turns into Hwy 150, look for Murdock basin road #137, stay on #137 for several dirt miles. There are a few small lakes in the area, Echo lake is on road #410.

Sorry I don't know distances...

Holy crap Ive been missing Red! My wife has settled in way too well, lol. I was waiting for her to give up and demand the Tacoma back but so far no such luck. The only complaint Ive heard to date was when she started a new job and moved into a pretty claustrophobic parking structure. All she said was "the CB antenna hits the roof, can I tuck it under the rack?"

But have no fear I have a plan. China Motor is starting to leak pretty good, and that kinda sucks balls, but its giving me the excuse that I need to drive Red in order to get some "maintenance" done. And then she'll hopefully fall back in love with her Taco, muahahah. Maintenance probably means a new bottom end, because I only need a tiny excuse to get rid of China Motor once and for all, and Ive also been eyeing some gears , since Red lacks in the low end grunt arena. But I gotta get her back. Maybe its all my wifeys plan to stop me from driving my money pit so that i wont spend money on it, hmmmm :der:
