Hi folks.
Noobie here. I love to make stuff with fiberglass and after being given a '97 4runner, had to make it more manly. I started this project Dec 1st and painted it yesterday.
This is a street cruiser that won't see any offroading. We live on an island off the coast of Alaska with 14 miles of road!!
I wasn't too fond of the color but a complete color change would be too much work. If I were to live with purple, it would have to be pretty over the top.
There was a huge dent in the front fender which I took off, pounded out and re-hung.
After that, I scored some 33x 12.50 tires on centerline rims ($400.00). I ordered a 3" suspension lift ($150.00) and a 3" body lift ($150.00).
The tires stuck out 4" beyond the fenders.
So I grabbed a sheet of 2" thick urethane roofing foam from a buddy who's a commercial roofer.
I cut some "hoops" to extend the 2 1/4" fender edge outward 4". This took two layers of the 2" foam. that I hot glued to the fender.
I found the shape of the flare I liked and cut a piece from the foam with a jigsaw.
Then cut 100 more!!!
Then I spray glued tin foil on the outside of the fender, marked the outermost edge of the flare on the foil using the template piece as a guide and laid up a few layers of fiberglass. This will give me a flange to bolt the flare securely.
Next, the arch pieces were hot glued in place.
And repeated for the other fenders
I decided to make a hood extension to add some "texture". This shape was inspired from a Ford Ranger.
And here it is today. The running boards are fiberglass and will be installed this weekend.
A homemade RoadRhino style front/ rear bumper will be built to fit the flares next and a sun visor.
