Bumper rust. Need help

So my 4runner spent 16 years in Kansas with salt and it does have its fair share of rust. Nothing too extreme but its there more so on the rear axle to the hitch which seems common. I have a chrome rear bumper and noticed spots of rust coming through the chrome on the passenger side. Now a month or so later the drivers side has some. While these spots are small they are still there and I expect it only to get worse.

My solution: There is a local rear bumper for sale that is OEM and never used for $150. It has the flare hole. The only downside is that it isn't chrome and it is the dark grey one but I feel I could just have it painted to match the cladding. I feel like its too good of a deal to pass up but I'm just hesitant as to how much it'll cost me to color match it and whether or not its worth it in the end

IMO, color matching is a waste of money. Want it to match? Paint it black and do the front bumper the same color, done. Depending on how bad the rust on the already existing bumper is you could always just do rust control and prevention on that before painting it.

If its just dots of rust, you can polish them off. Get some chrome polish and a rag and wipe them off. Happens to me every winter.

If it's not rot and just surface rust on the chrome, you can use something like Turtle Wax's Chrome Polish and Rust Remover. That's what I used and it worked perfectly!

That's messed up. People should not be ingesting that stuff haha. Pretty cool trick though!

WD-40 + steel wool works too. Even just steel wool by itself takes most of it off. Wax when you're done to slow it down.

I would wait and get the correct chrome pieces. Please don't use black spray paint on the chrome bumpers of a silver truck, it looks cheap. :toilet:

I have never dull. I've used that to polish the bumper before. Do you think that'll work?

Yeah I'm not painting it black. I don't really like black on my truck and it's not the color scheme I'm going for. I'd like to stick with the chrome bumpers and the beeline the back of them to prevent rust again. I just gotta wait for some to pop up

Yeah i used coke on the surface rust on my trailer hitch and it actually helped. Put a piece of meat in a glass and pour some coke in there and watch what happens to it haha

I'm having problems with my chrome bumper. First it was rusting in the back, so I sprayed POR15 since it was in a hidden spot.

Now I have small dots of rust coming through in the middle of the bumper. Once I remove these specs of rust should I apply anything to the bumpers to stop rust from coming back?

I thought chrome was suppose to stop rust
