Burn rubber smell on 2011 5th gen

I believe they ship from Japan with Cosmoline (sp) on certain engine parts, this is probably the smell burning off the engine parts.

I get the smell too. I like the idea that it is grease getting thrown onto a hot muffler. It makes sense since it is strongest after a bit of a drive and most noticeable on the right side of the vehicle (rear).

i feel like when i test drove a new 4runner a few weeks ago, i kinda smelled a slight burning smell. We only drive it for like 20 mikes or 45 mins, but the smell wasn't that pronounced. I have a new 4runner now and i smelled a little burning smell in the beginning, but, i dont' smell it anymore. Of course, i park outside.

Just thought I would bump this thread as I am STILL gettting a STRONG burning smell form my T4R after having it for a month now and 2000 KM.

Also, does anyone else get a noticeable loud noise when shifting from R to D?? its like a creaking noise combined with a big 'bump' from the shift. Very disconcerting as I've owned many autos (and 4runners) and none have been as loud or as rough as this. Shifting issue goes away almost completely once the transmission is warm though....

A lot of the trucks come with the "Toyo Guard" package (VIN etching in glass, interior treatment, undercoating, etc.). It could be some of that undercoating goop that got on the exhaust system which takes a while to completely burn off.

I think smell comes from tires not from engine.

Undercoating is not sprayed on the engine, but rather all over the rest of your undercarriage. It is not unusual to have some sprayed on parts of the exhaust system, thus causing the burning rubber smell. This is because "undercoating" is made of some of the same petroleum products your tires are made of. When burned, they smell the same.

I have the same problem on my 2010 Sr5, burnt rubber smell coming from the right rear wheel well only. I also have a vibration coming from the same area (the right rear tire). Can anyone tell me what this might be? I have only noticed this after the first service.

If you are sure it is just from that wheel area, get it to a dealer quick.

In the summer I get something similar off my 2004 still ! I have always suspected a rubber bracket that the exhaust hangs off at the rear, which likely gets hot from the exhaust and gives a burning rubber odor.

DaveS, I have to say, if it was the rubber holder for the exhust, it should have melted by now, 7 years later! I think it might be something else.....

LOL, comeon man. You know the difference between burning Cosmoline vs. rubber...... It's like the difference between Napalm vs. Diesel!

my 2011 had VERY strong oders. I was constantly checking things but it was just the new burning off. no big deal.

with a little over 5k miles in 2 months it still has a little odor after a long drive on a HOT day. but it's pretty much gone.
