Burning metal smell

I have to drive up a steep 1.5 mile long hill regularly. I sometimes stop at the post office at the top of the hill. I've noticed when I come out of the post office and restart my rig, I'll get a waft of metallic burning smell that comes in through the vents that dissipates pretty quickly. I used to notice a similar smell from my Audi after climbing the same hill and just thought it was the turbo heating up. Any thoughts on what it might be?

You are getting a heat soak condition. Your engine builds up a lot of heat on the climb up. If you then quickly shut it down the coolant stops circulating and you get high temps in the engine. If you have a scan gauge you will see a very hot temp for a few seconds when you fire it up again.

Good practice (and recommended for some turbos) is to let it idle for a couple minutes before shutting it down to allow the engines internal temps to stabilize. That should eliminate what you are smelling.

I had heard about this previously but installing an ultra gauge gave a good visual of what happens.
