Burnt Valve. What to do.

Well took the runner over to my father in law this afternoon it had a kinda rough idle and he is a mechanic so wanted to get his thoughts. It runs good at speed just sitting its rough. Well he is pretty sure it has a burnt valve, it also has a slight oil leak around the oil pan.

Trying to figure out weather to get it rebuilt or just buy a motor that is known to be good and replace it. Or just let it go, this runner will be parked at my hunting club only used while I am there but I do have to drive it 250 miles to get it there. This is a 89 with 22RE motor.

^ Yup. Or just rebuild the one you have.

I would make sure its a burnt valve before you go buying parts though.

It is making some noises but not back firing, he put a dollar bill over the exhaust and it would suck it in every so often. Also putting his hand over the exhaust would just about shut off the motor. He is a ASE Cert Master tech but at a dodge store, but has worked on about everything over the years.

Take your head off and take a close look at the valves and the bottom of the head. If you need to replace the head, it can be dome for a few hundred bucks. You don't need to replace a good motor because of a bad head.

That's your problem... You need to tighten the hardware on the sides. It forces the head to open and you don't burn yourself out on the hardware :)

If you have a shop install the head for you, I would imagine they would charge at least $500. You can install it yourself in an afternoon with basic tools. Check out the factory service manual at the top of the forums. there is a step by step on how to remove and re-install the head. The only special tool that you'll need will be a torque wrench.

I got that downloaded, wish there was a thread that had step by step pics. I am pretty good with a wrench but never did this kind of stuff. Looks like the vac lines would be the biggest PIA to get back right.

There are plenty of vacuum diagrams online if you search. Also, you should have the sticker under your hood with the vacuum diagrams.
