Busted Tow Hitch

Can anyone confirm that the bracket and tow hitch plug that are broken in this picture are the bracket and wiring harness listed on the various parts websites? They are not included on the diagram, and I want to be sure this is correct before dropping $200. The fact that they list a separate upper and lower bolt is throwing me too, since they look the same to me.

You might be able salvage the bracket. You maybe able to bend the bracket back into shape. The bolts look okay. The plugin is a different story. $230 for a new harness is a bit pricey. I would suggest just buying a new head at any Walmart or Auto place and splicing the wires. You probably don't want to go throught the process if restring the entire harness through the 4R.

Those trademotion diagrams suck and are not accurate. That site is the only one I know of that has the actual diagrams that they use in the parts department. It will also narrow the part by VIN if you put it in. That it will only show the parts that were on your 4 runner.

Thanks. What was your source for this info? The only reference to that 4runner part that I found was here, and it doesn't list pricing or anything.

Thanks, bookmarked. I can't seem to find the hitch parts on there, but I agree, the diagrams are much more useful on this site.

Yeah, it's the stock receiver as far as I know. It was bent like that when I bought it.


I might just pick up this fairly cheap Tow Ready replacement harness that has an integrated 4 pole connecter. The 7 to 4 adapters always seem like they would shake loose on bumpy roads anyway. I'll have to check under the rear bumper in the morning to see if there is a decent place to mount it.

Yea looks like the part that holds the tow connections is bent. Can't you just bend it back? Not a big deal IMO. Not the best pic but I yanked mine to try to clean up the back some. I just tucked all electrical stuff up around the frame with some wire ties. You can see the wires for my roof mounted tow lights leading to the connections new location. I have run it like this for 7 or so years. Not a big deal.

Did you fix the busted Tow Hitch?

Todd, I was wondering if and how you ended up fixing your busted tow hitch? My 04 4runner is in the same exact condition. I ordered a new OEM light socket bracket, part # 82953-60010 but it does not fit. Apparently it is for an integrated tow package that connects directly to the rear frame. My tow package is like yours with the bar below the frame. I have searched and searched and cannot find a part number for the correct light socket bracket so I was curious how you made out with your fix. Thanks, Dan

The correct part number for the bracket is PT228-89440-BK and it was $27.00 from the dealership
