Because the option to save messages in your Sert Items folder is NOT enabled by default.

Look in User CP > Settings & Options > Edit Options

It's the last check box in the Private Messaging area. Check that box if you want to retain a history of your sent messages.

Note: sent messages saved count towards your 1,000 message forum allowance
