According to Carmaker1 on the 6th gen forum, the new gen is delayed until MY2024 at the earliest. The MY2023 will still be a 5th gen.

So we all have a little more time to get a Tahara-built one. Hopefully by then the chip shortage will be minimizing and we can get more normal inventories/allocations

I have a 2022 on order and am glad I pulled the trigger given the rumors about the next Gen. I think Gen 5Â’s will hold their value as many people will want to have the V6 engine.

When did you order it? What model/options did you order? They wouldn't even let me order a 22 as of last week because of the Tahara shutdown.

I love all the upgrades on the 22 TRD Off Road Prem and couldn't wait til the next gen.

So I put money down on a super white 22 TRD ORP today that supposedly is in port in Houston and will be in Dallas by the end of the month. Definite sellers market as I had to practically beg them to sell it out of state as I'm in Oklahoma now and couldn't get the option(Off-Road Premium Plus Package— Multi-Terrain Monitor MTM) that I wanted up here. It was a special order that someone cancelled.

Paid $370 under invoice (47k)for the white but the other one I found at port with MTM was the Lunar Rock color and a San Antonio dealer wouldn't give me a price or let me buy it. Said it would be $3000 or 5000 over msrp because of the color and very limited future supply. I was on the fence with the LR color anyways so that pretty much made up my mind and went back to my original super white.

I feel like I was incredibly stupidly lucky to get my TRD Pro for MSRP last February. I had to wait a few weeks for it to arrive, but that was before the whole shortage thing hit. Now is just the worst time to buy a car.

I think by next spring things will be back to normal, definitely by this time next year when the 23s are arriving, perhaps the last of the old tech 4runner.

There was one sold vehicle in all of Canada's inventory and I was told I'll have to wait till January, may be February.
This is limited production and most dealerships get one or zero in this trim.
Other trims are more readily available, I was offered TRD Prod right away.

I got in touch with a bunch of dealers and 4Runners are hard to get, Trail would be very hard to get, there are not many of them made and allocated.
Some dealers said they get one per year at most.
MSRP, no discount.

Funny thing it's supposed to be 'cheap' model.

I paid 41K CAD 11 years ago, now I am looking at 55K at least. They tell me the inflation is 2%, LOL.

It's called compounding... @ 2% you are at $51k for the same $41k. Add additional features and safety equipment and you are at $55k. Or, run the same analysis at 3% inflation and your $41k becomes $57k after 11 years.

I'm on the east coast, I was considering the trail edition in lunar rock but that's only available in the states. My local dealer told me a trd off-road could take until the spring at this point. They placed an order for a '21 four months ago and it hasn't arrived yet. With all of the features an off-road comes with here in Canada I'm pretty much sold on a lunar rock off-road. $54,400 is a lot of money but it sounds like the dealer might trim a grand off.
I'm just sitting on the fence until Toyota releases the mpg and price on the Tundras. If it gets 9L/100kms on the highway that will be a tough choice. Still the simplicity and long term reliability of the 4Runner will be hard to beat. I can't see twin turbos lasting like this 4L V6.

The summary of this thread is I am buying 5th gen cause it works for me and I am buying Trail because it's cheaper and has no 'push button' start due to theft risk.

As far as off road features go, I do not go off road for the sake of it. I go places and I do it alone, so I hate getting stuck, this means I don't try super hard conditions.
I had rear diff lock on my 96 and I used it 2-3 times in more than 10 years, so I could do without it or all the electronics. Decent AT tires and common sense go a long way.

Haha, no problem. The scary thing is the income curve has been lagging behind inflation for decades. We are all getting poorer.

Back on topic.. i bought a '21 Nightshade in January and if i didn't have the need for a truck/SUV I would have waited till the next generation just for the likely improved engine/trans. Of course, we still have no idea what the drivetrain will actually be. I really hope its a detuned version of the V35A.

Either way, the resale is so good, if someone wants (and can get) a 5th gen T4R right now, then just do it. You can sell it in a few years and get the 6th gen if it suites you better.

I say go for the the 5th gen. You know exactly what you are getting and what to expect out of it, lots and lots of fun years and miles out of it. Sure the newer gen may be better in some ways, or more exciting, but at this point its still uncertain. Another thing to think about, their production may be delayed as well, so while you wait, to get yourself a 5th gen and enjoy the hell out of it!!

Can’t tell ya what to do, only my own experience.

Purchased a 21 ORP last month. This is an unneeded hobby car. I didn’t wait because I wanted to get my mods on ASAP and get out there and enjoy it. I’ve already put 2000 miles in 33 days with all the camping and off roading I have done. For perspective, I average 8000 miles a year, before the pandemic.

I put $1000 down in late August. I’ve now had it for a couple of weeks. ORP in lunar rock, moonroof, mtm. Paid msrp plus some dealer add ons. Love my new 4Runner.

Just grabbed a ‘22. Go for the known instead of waiting for the unknown. Hindsight is 20/20 but you most likely won’t be heart broken!

Given that your current rig is still going great, I personally would wait until the next Gen 4R gets released to make a true informed decision. There will be plenty of like new Gen 5’s available still.

If the improvements and advancements to the new Gen 3 Tundra are any indication of what will happen to the Gen 6 4R, it will be wildly impressive.

I just went through this and decided to buy a 2022 now. Here is some of my thinking.

1. I KNOW I like the 5th gen. Maybe I won’t like the 6th gen? Maybe the pricing will be stupid? Who knows. It will probably be great, but we won’t know for a while and I’d rather just have the one I like now. And 5th gens hold their value so well that if you REALLY want a 6th gen you can probably trade it in without a big loss. Most of the things people like about the 5th gen on here are things that the average consumer complains about so we can only hope Toyota holds the line on the next one and doesn’t minivan-ize it like most of the competition.

2. I personally don’t care about fuel economy. I have a take home work truck that handles my commute. Wife is on mat leave and will probably be working from home after. We live in a small town. Don’t care about fuel mileage. A lot of the stuff companies do to increase fuel mileage (turbo engines, 45 speed automatic transmissions, lightening chassis, stop-start engines, hybrids, CVTs, etc) can actually be more annoying than the bad fuel economy.

3. I really don’t like the idea of buying any new vehicle in the first model year. Even a Toyota. Have had nothing but issues and heard nothing but issues from people who have done that. 5th gen is a known quantity and pretty bulletproof.

I just went through this and decided to buy a 2022 now.

That’s great - never know which nanny lockdowns will be added in the future.

Would it be prudent to avoid models with market adjustments (above MSRP) so that you’re not out that much more money if you decide to trade?
