buy new 4R now or wait for redesign?

I just went through this and decided to buy a 2022 now. Here is some of my thinking.

1. I KNOW I like the 5th gen. Maybe I won’t like the 6th gen? Maybe the pricing will be stupid? Who knows. It will probably be great, but we won’t know for a while and I’d rather just have the one I like now. And 5th gens hold their value so well that if you REALLY want a 6th gen you can probably trade it in without a big loss. Most of the things people like about the 5th gen on here are things that the average consumer complains about so we can only hope Toyota holds the line on the next one and doesn’t minivan-ize it like most of the competition.

2. I personally don’t care about fuel economy. I have a take home work truck that handles my commute. Wife is on mat leave and will probably be working from home after. We live in a small town. Don’t care about fuel mileage. A lot of the stuff companies do to increase fuel mileage (turbo engines, 45 speed automatic transmissions, lightening chassis, stop-start engines, hybrids, CVTs, etc) can actually be more annoying than the bad fuel economy.

3. I really don’t like the idea of buying any new vehicle in the first model year. Even a Toyota. Have had nothing but issues and heard nothing but issues from people who have done that. 5th gen is a known quantity and pretty bulletproof.

I put $1000 down in late August. I’ve now had it for a couple of weeks. ORP in lunar rock, moonroof, mtm. Paid msrp plus some dealer add ons. Love my new 4Runner.

I had called Cavender a couple of weeks ago to see if who ever ordered the one with the MTM(you?) might back out. The only ones in the gulf states regions with the Multi Terrain Monitor option were ordered by an individual as Gulf States only ordered them with the moonroof option and then they put their regional add ons at port in Houston.

I had money down on a white one in Dallas that was still on a ship and then Universal Toyota in San Antonio called last week and said somebody ordered and then backed out of a Army Green coming in one with the MTM option(PO) I wanted and immediately put money down and bought it.

It just got unloaded off the truck a few hours ago and I'm flying down to pick it up Saturday morning .

If the improvements and advancements to the new Gen 3 Tundra are any indication of what will happen to the Gen 6 4R, it will be wildly impressive.

I hope, but doubt. The Tundra was an incredibly boring vehicle that needed to go big. The 4Runner seems to be seriously like as-is.

Ford doesn’t iron anything out anymore. They just stick to marketing and accept high customer turnover. Ask me how I know. 2015 Mustang GT and 2017 F150 5.0 nothing but trouble and the worst possible customer service. One thing I noticed was that dealers simply don’t want to deal with Ford on warranty work. Very obvious, hugely important, warranty problems go unfixed. You’d think that’s crazy, but it’s not. My F150 had a horrible piston knock from a loose wrist pin and 3 dealers said sorry, it’s normal. It’s not normal, they just won’t be paid to fix it because Ford says it’s normal. I had the same engine on the Mustang and the engine was fine. On it the transmission was coming apart, dash removed twice to replace heater cores, etc. Terrible, Chinese junk in those vehicles and Ford just says screw you.

Both vehicles had between 5,500-7,500 miles when I got rid of them. Ford is that bad.

2022 is the first model year where I went "huh, Toyota may have finally added enough to where it is worth the jump from an early 5th gen to a later 5th gen."

That being said, I think the 2023 is going to be a 5th gen as well. Carmaker1 has given a lot of detailed posts in other threads, he seems to have some good knowledge. Hearing the redesign got pushed to 2024. He also has said why the 4Runner has been dragged out so long with very minimal updates, supposedly Toyota Japan has wanted to axe it several times.

Nice. Glad you found you new 4Runner. I love the mtm as it gives you 360 view in normal (non off road) situations. I actually didn’t special-order mine. I went in and talked to a sales guy from whom I’ve bought many cars. I actually didn’t know specific options on the one I got. I only found out about mtm a few days before delivery. Any way, congrats on your new 4R. Hope you enjoy it as much as I’m enjoying mine.

Better to have purchased a late first gen Bronco than an early second gen. This is especially true when redesigns are heavily influenced by external considerations such as Green energy. I think the 5th Gen is likely the last of the breed.

I put money down on an allocated 22 ORP today in lunar rock. It should be here by Thanksgiving apparently. It has MTM which is awesome.

I've heard the next Gen may no longer be built in Japan. I definitely want a Japanese built unit. Guess we'll see.

No, it will just be the 6th gen. Still a truck. Still a 4Runner. Many will complain no matter what they come out with, but it will be very successful.

You're making mountains it of moll hills. Skip eating out a few times and it'll pay for it. Not like they're charging you 5k for crappy shocks.

Your dealer is playing with pennies. Consider yourself lucky. I started from a negotiation position trying to eliminate almost $3K worth of dealer add-ons.

The stuff that’s listed there is all factory accessories that’s listed on the Monroney. The dealer can’t take that stuff off and get a credit like they would with their own actual add-on stuff.

You can attempt to negotiate the price of that stuff down as part of the general negotiation. However, all the stuff you listed aren’t actually dealer add ons. Those came from the factory so they can’t just take that stuff and get a credit and reinstall in another car. That stuff was all charged to the dealer in the invoice of the car.

Hi all,

I drive 2011 4R, had it since new, 11 years next month.
I had 96 4R before for many years. Love them.

The 2011 is getting old, I could drive it few more years, but I'll have to replace it within 2-3 years. In Ontario, Canada they rust a lot and I have to have reliable vehicle for my long trips into the outdoors.

The question is buy now or wait until redesign which is expected for 2023?

I am quite happy with the current one, the only reason to wait would be better fuel consumption, reportedly they plan 2.4 Turbo and 7-8 speed transmission.
OTOH, most things don't get better with redesigns these days. Some people don't like turbo engines. I plan to keep it for 10 or more years.

What do you think?
BTW, 2 of my neighbors had their 4r and highlander stolen TWICE within the last 2 years. Both had smart keys.
I am thinking of ordering Trail (which I understand has a regular key) for that reason only.

In terms of security, you could install a ignition kill switch or (cheaper and awesome) install a Sprint Booster and lock the pedal if parked in a shady area. I doubt a thief would know how to bypass either system. GL OP.

This is not likely. COVID pandemic created shortage of many things, 4runners is one of them, esp. Trail trim. As I said, I am speficially interested in Trail due to regular key and no Push Button start. It probably sounds crazy to a lot of people, but looks like I live in the centre of Toyota stealing universe.

Do they still make “The Club”? I’d have to check. Remember, it was that anti-theft device that hooked around the brake pedal and the steering wheel to render the vehicle undriveable.
