Buying 02- pics of rust under body

I am planning to buy this 02' this weekend. Supercharged, looks clean and pretty well maintained. 94k, has not had timing belt and water pump done. Here are pics of the undercarriage.

Thoughts? I cant tell if that is bad or good. I am in MI so most vehicles have some rust underneath.

$8300 by thew way. Feel free to tell me if it is a good or bad deal.

Cant see the pics either, but most trucks this age will have some surface rust underneath. It all depends on if the truck was rust proofed and if you get bad winters & salt on the roads. If your planning on modifications just make sure you buy some PB blaster, a torch, breaker bar, and your golden.

Save them to your computer.. upload them to a photo host site (photobucket, imageshack, tinypic, etc etc..) Then use the img code to post them. Will look like this

I can't see them on my comp but i see them on my phone, the pics are blurry and of areas that are not that relevant. From what i could see of the frame, it had surface rust on it which could be minor or hiding a bigger problem but i cant tell until i see better pics of more areas. If i was paying $8300 i would want it to be MINT underneath.

Well, there is a fairly wide variance in pricing from place to place, but here is what jumps out to me:

The pluses:
- it is a 2002 and low mileage
- it is supercharged

The minuses:
- it lived in the salty mid-west
- just doesn't look all that clean (like the rust spot on the rear hatch, engine compartment stuff is dirty and corroded)
- hasn't had TB & WP done
- no other real value adds (like a lift, or armor, or whatever)

Maybe if it is a super value for the area, it could be worth it. Me, I'd be worried about dealing with rust issues.

The rust on the tail gate does not look promising. Also the areas of the rust on your undercarriage seems to show there is more rust "hidden" from plain view which can lead to strength issues when it comes to the chassis. I would inspect it real good, (Bring a small mirror to check under the chassis in areas you can't see.). You say it is well maintained but with the amount of rust I see, it is not really, "well maintained". Maybe it's "ok maintained."

you'll need to look into the rust a bit more. check the extent of rust on the ladder frame if it's inside and out. repairing or replacing the ladder frame would be expensive and time consuming and may not be worth it

Lets see some pics of frame just before the rear wheels. That seems to be the spot where 4runners rust out the worst.

The inside of the frame next to the rear control arms (where they are welded to the frame) is always the worst. Especially between the gas tank. I would check that first.

From what I can see, given the age of the truck its really not that bad I'd go for it. There are lots of ways to deal with and prevent further rusting as long as its not out of control.

The tailgate rust would freak me out. It's one of those things like seeing a vehicle with cheap tires - if they really cared about the vehicle, they would not put cheap tires on it. In this case, if they really cared, they would get the tailgate fixed.

Makes you wonder what else they skipped.

4Runners aren't rare - unless you're in a hurry, head south and west to try to find a cleaner one.

I talked to that guy early last week and decided to pass. Seems like a decent deal but I didn't want to put a timing belt/water pump and 7th injector kit on the truck.

I think that's a good move. I personally would pay extra for a 3rd gen from a non-rusty area. Will save money, time and a bunch of headaches down the road over dealing with one with a lot of rust.
