Buying a 4runner, thoughts?

I think it's ridiculously overpriced and those guys are total sleazeballs, but at least it's a NW vehicle and not a rust-bucket from the NE like so many others from 405 Motors (they get a ton of their vehicles from the NE).

That being said, it is clean and there is a premium on 4Runners in this area no matter what. Just depends on how bad you want it. They ask a more of a premium there because they can. High demand. Might not see another clean, low mileage 5sp in a long time.

Might be worth $9 - $10K, at most, depending on local conditions. The most important issue is rust. No rust whatsoever on the underside and bolts (look very closely)? Go for it, at the right price. Rusty bolts? Keep looking. Make sure you have cash left for maintenance.

I looked up "Power to dream" in my manual and can't find it anywhere...so it MUST be a one of a kind.
 
I just got mine a couple months ago, exactly like that but red and payed less than half that. Even got the 5 speed and locking diff. I didn't know that was good till after I got it, just thought it was cool. Ha ha ha.

yeah that problem is that it is the NW and we don't get a whole lot of them out here. But we do have the advantage of being virtually rust free.

They don't negotiate. $13k or nothing.

but if that's true, then I'm not going to spend $13k if i can wait and get one for a lot less.

I've actually only ever seen one around here before I got mine and had to drive 200 miles to get it. But no rust problems around here for the most part, unless its a Chevy pickup...

That IS a hard to find rig, 5-speed AND e-locker, but $13K for a vehicle that 14 years old :scared:
I would NOT pay nothing close to that.
 
I bought my 2000 e-locked 5 speed for $12,500 with 50,000 miles on it.

There's no way I'd pay 13k for a truck with twice the miles.

It's an insane price to pay.

You can buy a non locked high miles 5speed for 3-4k, replace the engine with a low miles JDM, put in an after market locker, put in a lift, do upper and lower joints, new clutch and your total cost would still be under 10k. (2k for engine, 1k for lift, 2k for locker - intentionally high estimates).

You'd also still have money left over to paint it any green you like. It sure as hell would look better than 14 year old paint.

Carfax is not trustworthy as trustworthy as you think it is. My 4Runner has been in two accidents each over $3k in repairs that do not show up on Carfax.

Don't assume Carfax means it is a good truck. All Carfax really shows is who last registered it, what state and if it was ever salvaged.

A LOT of vehicles will be showing up on the West Coast soon that were damaged in 2012's Hurricanes. They will be salvaged titles or re-issued titles with flood damage.

Take the truck to a mechanic or a body shop. That is the only way to know.

Don't overpay, thats not very smart. These trucks are not as rare as you have been led to believe and the difference between 85k miles and 125k miles is not a big deal.

RE: your desired features .... well IMO, a 5-speed is WAY overrated. I love my auto and no reason to believe the 5-speed is superior. Now it was a 6-speed FRS we were talking about that would be one thing but on this truck it is not a great upgrade, certainly not a "deciding factor" over say good paint, 4WD and a limited package.

Also despite the low mileage you will still end up doing all of this soon because the truck is still 10+ years old.
- steering rack | $600+
- radiator | $400+
- suspension | $1000-$1500
- brakes | $400 - $800
- tires | $800
- plugs, wires, timing belt, WP, O2 sensors | a lot of $$

That is just maintenance, we haven't even talked mods yet.

thanks! That's good perspective. Is 225,000 to high? I'm in college so time is sort of precious to mem obviously. But my dad is a mechanic and i had a project 4runner until i totaled it. (Not my fault, stupid girl didn't stop.)

my 1994 had 208,000 and ran fine. And i've heard the 3.4L is better than the 3.0L i had too.

My main reason for a 5-spd is purely personal. I just enjoy a manual trans better.
